Probably the best Chinese movie of the year

Just watched this afternoon. Personally I don't think the film is engaging enough but it's fun to watch, and the audience kept laughing all the time. Wish they can get a good translator before publishing to non Chinese-speaking areas.

His movies NEVER disappoint, just like Wong Kar Wai.

reply

Yeah it was awesome. Gonna be a tough one to translate for sure!

Just saw it. This film was quite possibly one of the worst excuses of filmmaking I have ever seen in my life. The plot is unegaging, silly, and completely scattered all over the place. I am really disappointed in Jiang Wein. He took one of the great Chinese actors of the past twenty years (Ge You) and did nothing but make him scream and shout for 90 minutes. The editing was horrible too. I can't believe some one gave this piece of garbage an 8.4 out of 10, but my estimation it's barely deserving of a 1/10.

Let the Bullets Fly. Sure let them fly into the projector and destory this crappy film reel.

AND YOU,ONE OF THE MOST STUPID AND BLIND MOVIE FANS IN HISTORY~~ OH SORRY YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF NAME OF"MOVIE FAN". MDR````
I REALLY FOUND IT REALLY WONDERFUL MOVIE! AND HOWEVER THE FILM BOX REACHED ALREADY 500,000,000 yuan(maybe 80 million $ )
SO WHY NOT LET OUR PEOPLE CHOISE AND TELL YOU WHETHER IT IS A GREAT MOVIE,GUY? HOWEVER COME BACK TO YOUR BABY-BED,YOUR MOTHER IS WAITING, THE WORLD IS DIRT AND DANGEROUS FOR YOU CHILD :D

I thought it was a boiling piece of crap and I'm sorry that all these terrific actors were in it. I hardly find a guy disembowling himself just to prove a point to be funny. And frankly, it copied every Cowboy movie I've ever seen. It was lazy filmmaking and it was frankly disgusting. I truly expecting a lot more.

And frankly, it copied every Cowboy movie I've ever seen.

This is what I thought.

Typical premise with a remote town ruled by mobsters, some vigilante is thrown into the situation, becomes enemies with the mobsters and takes them out. Been there, done that.

I have some friends from mainland that hyped up this movie to the extremes, kept telling me that I MUST see this movie, so due to that I was relatively underwhelmed. It's not a bad movie, reasonably entertaining while it lasted, but not a movie that will stick in my mind for more than 1-2 days.

reply

there's hardly any decent chinese movie that comes to my place

so whatever it is, as long as it comes with some reputable actors, director

i will say it is a good movie

reply

Thanks for being bloody rude. Please learn to criticise and not to insult. It is a movie intended for Chinese. Non-Chinese just do not understand what it is about.
But we do understand that your UPPER CASE letter is rude. I think it should be removed from the letters. It only makes you look rude.

reply

Yes, it is terrible. I couldn't watch it after about 30 mins. My (mainland Chinese) SO finished it and hated it too.

reply

It's honestly not quite as dire as you make out Greenmachine(perhaps 4/10), but I also hated it and agree with your comments on the poor plot and awful editing.

I think the quality of this film is best summed up as 'made-in-china-for-china' definitely not of export quality. A rather big waste of money that the Chinese market deserve better than, and that western cinemas were lucky to not bother showing.

Thinking about it, when was the last genuinely good chinese film? I've seen very few Chinese masterpieces like the Koreans (kim ji-woon, park chan-wook) have been producing in the last decade.

reply

Chinese make films for Chinese, not for Westerners.

They have nothing to prove to others.

Either you learn Chinese and understand the movies or just stick to Hollywood movies and don't comment on Chinese ones.

reply

Just learning Chinese doesn't really cut it. To really appreciate this film one needs deep understanding of Chinese cultural references, history, politics, and of course humor style, which is very different than that of the West. I'm afraid this culture gap is huge in this case unfortunately which explains the wide range of views for this film.

reply

I must be Chinese then because i loved it(im lieing im Welsh really)

reply

Regardless of where a film comes from a crap film is a crap film. And this film was as bad as they come. If I see a poor film then I have the right to call it so. Regardless of whether or not something is lost in the translation the film I saw was a Joke.

Nothing to prove to others? No, they don't. There are plenty of decent Chinese films around, sadly though this isn't one of them. And there's no excuse for this turkey.

reply

Heap of crap? Believe me, I've seen WAY worse Chinese films than this, and i thought it was really done well AND good, with some creatively done scenes (like when Huang's men get robbed at the funeral, the showdown with the cool-looking cloth masks with red circles at night, and the final showdown between Huang Fox and Pocky Zhang, which dosen't turn out how you'd expect it to in this kind of film). I ain't Chinese either, but I enjoyed the heck out of it,one scene even made me laugh, the jokes about English words were funny, and I love me some Chow Yun-Fat, who finally gets to be funny for a change.

Crap film pure and simple. Regardless of what might have been lost in the translation nothing can make up for all the crap I had to sit through. I rated it a one, and that's being generous. What a disjointed heap of crap. Usually I like Chinese films too....

you really are a richard

I liked it and I did see it in translation. The part where No 1 son "proved" he only ate one bowl was hilarious. It was fun.
