I don't think it was rubbish, but it sure was boring. Nothing exciting, everything already seen in other movies, the humor didn't work out well with some dramatic moments, it tried too hard to be witty, but it was rather cliché.

It's just a forgettable movie.

I think the film is a classic. Foreigners won't like this movie as much as Chinese. The dialogue and context is lost on you to a great degree.

First, you would need to have studied how the business of Chinese politics had been conducted throughout history. Then you'll have to understand, in the past ( maybe even now ), writers can only mock these behaviors by having zero reference to anything the writers are trying to say, so as to not land themselves in jail. But the general public knows what they're saying nonetheless because it's blatantly obvious. In that sense, this is a very funny movie.

I admit that I couldn't understand it. Apparently it is a Chinese film meant to be enjoyed by Chinese. As I'm not Chinese I suspect I missed all the humour, and wondered what it was all about.

fair enough. you must take the Chinese Government's censor in the film industry, i mean, the true meaning of this movie is hided beneath the context. Even a Chinese without necessary knowledge of some historical legends would not get the idea. Jiang Wen has always been a director with altitude, which is rather rare in China nowadays. But personally speaking, he can do better than this one. Despite all, I love the film " do not take the audiences as dummies" , you know why if you get to watch other Chinese movies. Those are AUTHENTIC rubbish

people didn't rate this movie highly because of its action sequences. not at all.
you can't be more than 5 years old. i would advise you to stick to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the future. it's more your kind of movie.

Jan it was a good film with humor and wit throughout. The script was good the characters engaging and the film had a great overall feel and look to it. Dont be so rigid just watch the film again and see it for what it is, a funny tongue in cheek poke at greed and corruption.

Apparently we watched completely different films. Humor and wit my ass. The film was about as funny as a punch to the balls. Cringeworthy in every respect.

lol sorry but where i live a kick or punch to the "balls" can be considered hilarious unless you are on the receiving end. While the film is not to everyone's taste, i do respect your feelings on the film.

If you were never exposed to American pop culture, why would a comedy making fun of American pop culture be funny? This film has a lot of wit if you are well versed in the history of China's politics.

And unlike American comedy style which tends to drag on. This film's comedy style is sharp, direct, and quick. You'll miss them all if you don't connect the dots fast enough.

Watched this, and feel the same it just wasn't that enjoyable and NOT funny. I did watch it with a Taiwanese friend and they said the jokes would be lost on foreigners. So basically, if you're Chinese maybe its funny? If your not it's not funny at all, and not that interesting of a movie.

It's not as simple as a cultural thing. I highly doubt Chinese kids nowadays would get the jokes. You'll need to be very knowledgable in the business of politics in China's history. As for cultural humor, it has more to do with Chinese writers' common practice of saying one thing but is actually referring to stuff that they can't really express out loud.

It's something even foreigners who study Chinese cultures won't be able to get the full context. Your Taiwanese friends got it not just because they are Taiwanese. They probably paid attention in high school and college and had good grades.

Foreigners watching this, would be like someone watching a comedy making fun of American pop culture but who also was never exposed to American pop culture in any way. So it has little to do difference in sense of humor.

its not a funny movie or humor movie!
humor in the movie are very bad, and they are intended to be bad!
so why? why a director let his movie to be like this?
because it is an anti-communist movie!
because in china ,if you want scold the PARTY by a movie，you have to let the movie pass through the review of the PARTY!
I have to say, that is almost impossible!!! but Mr Jiang succeed!

It's not the humor and history that's the problem, it's the plot and characters. People can pretend to follow this but at some point it becomes impossible. I just went with the flow and enjoyed it anyway, but at some point it was like having a dream that made little sense.
