The writer/director in the commentary says that she was supposed to be Julius Rosenberg, apparently she was there with a male friend who was dressed as Ethel Rosenberg. The director admits that this did not come across as he had hoped it would.

Yeah, I didn't get that at all either (maybe if the Ethel Rosenberg character was in the scene!) - I thought Chaplin - but no moustache....
Interesting that the father came out to him, and he is attracted to a woman in a suit.....hm....what would Freud say?

For a moment I thought the film was going to say her distress was because she was in denial and it would be a reversal of his father's situation. But only for a moment.
She was supposed to be Charlie Chaplin - the silent film star and director.

She kinda came across as Marlena Dietrich to me, but that's generally what I think when I see a feminine woman in a men's suit.
