I loved Plummer and was delighted with his win. He also gave one of the best Oscar acceptance speeches in memory.
It wasn’t a great performance but it was a charming and graceful one - much worse performances have won before and since. Given the competition, I think he was a good choice, and he had a second strong role that year in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which always helps.
Brooks was good in Drive but I always thought the acclaim he received was more due to casting against type - I really don’t think his role was particularly memorable. I would love to see Brooks with an Oscar, but a comic role (or script) would seem the more likely place for him to receive one.
