I'm only addressing the OP.
Christopher Plummer has given a career of excellent performances that have never gotten him past a nomination at the AA.
Much like Peter O'Toole, Morgan Freeman, and Alan Arkin, the award was given to Plummer because he'd gone so long and been nominated multiple times, but had never won.
I thought many of the supporting cast in Midnight In Paris truly did a superior job to Plummer (not to take anything away from him, but he didn't do anything I haven't seen in Philadelphia, Milk, or any other gay topical film), and many other Oscar related films featured similarly powerful performances.
I'm ecstatic he finally won, though.
I will admit it seemed cruel to give Plummer a "gimme" Oscar, then give Streep her 18th Oscar (over Viola Davis, who blew me away in The Help).
