Total Rip off

First thing, they tried to modernized the story, then they bring out the props from Return of the Jedi, with the (jabba's Sand Barge) and Traci's (Leia Costume), Jabba the Hut (standin' with slave girls), But all in all the story follows the story almost to the end.

The Acting was a little wooden and special effects were looow rate. They do a better jumping in Heroes. The Humans on Mars (Barsoom) have reddish skin in the book, and Tars Race has 4 arms. But thats what you get if you give film writers freedom to rewrite to what they have to budget for.

Over all the movie was enjoyable, we've been waiting a long time for atleast a film version to give vision to the story.

reply

I was totally with you, up until the "overall the movie was enjoyable" part. Had it been a student production I might have rated it better than total waste of time, don't see how could anyone like it.

reply

Yeah. I have been surprised by how many people think this film is even just o.k.

At least I didn't have my hopes up for it. I didn't even know it had been in production until I saw it in the store. It is now in my 'sell' pile although I don't give much credit to whoever will pay for it. That, I am sad to say, includes me. That this production company has some of my money is a fact I will forever regret.

The PIXAR film I actually do have hopes for, but it will need more than just a glossy finish on it for me to like it. Avatar proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can't shine $hit and if JCOM is that I will have no kind words for it.

What baffles me about this is the fact that Asylum is an independent company beholden to no-one, releasing direct-to-dvd, they saw fit to cast an ex-porn star, and still couldn't bring themselves to bare some skin. The only prospect an audience has going here is titillation, yet just as Disney (inevitably) will, they dodged it. Does Asylum think they're above this?

I'm guessing Sabato wasn't getting his drawers off for anyone, so Lords couldn't reasonably be asked to do the same, presuming she's even up to it anymore. In which case they shouldn't have cast them. What an absurd, pointless company Asylum is.

reply

because they are cheesy b-films.

reply

Lords makes a big deal of the fact that she doesn't do nudity anymore. Skimpy, yes, but nudity, no. Because, you know, she's above that sort of thing. Now.

> Traci's (Leia Costume)

If you actually know anything about Burroughs, then you'd know that it works the other way around -- Leia's costume was more modeled on the sort Dejah Thoris would wear.

I haven't seen it but if this is the kind of complaint being put forth it's probably not that bad.

reply

Agreed (Re: the costume, haven't seen the movie). Star Wars was released in '77. Check out the cover art by Frank Frazetta, amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000852ST8, for a 1970 Doubleday reprinting of "A Princess of Mars".

reply

Traci Lords doesn't do nudity anymore. She played a porn star in "Zach and Miri Make a Porno" but others appeared nude, not her.
"Princess of Mars" is bad enough that I don't think even the Syfy Channel will play it.

And I'm watching and enjoying it right now! I read the book years ago, and while I miss that this is the planet Mars of our solar system, I'm glad they chose the spirit of the original over ignoring what we know about Mars today.
Traci Lords makes a very good Dejah Thoris!

Whatever you're drinking, may I please have some too?

reply

TRACI LORDS as Dejah?

She's getting long in the tooth, with a pot belly, and in need of support garments.

The original princess, who wore nothing but her jewels, is far too noble to be portrayed by one so ignoble.

reply

I agree with the other writer "What are you drinking?" I 'taped' it and tried to watch it this morning. I watched about 25 minutes and then erased it from my DVR. I read the books years ago and loved every page of them. I was appalled at the bad script for this movie and even worse were the special effects and bad acting. Traci Lords as Dejah Thoris??? She's too old and she can't act with a dang. Ewww!!! I hope never to see this ever again! Makes any '50's B science fiction movie look like an academy award winner!

reply

Traci Lords makes a pretty good anything as long as she's not wearing much.

reply

It's on SyFy now. I can honestly say I have never seen such an awful film.

Oh, and what's with the 'Surfer Dude' accent on some of those aliens????

reply

Haha! It's on SyFy right now!

reply

Syfy played it today, again.

I'M A TRAVELING SALESPERSON. I SELL BANJOS.

reply

I think SyFy read your post, and are trying to prove you wrong. Yet again they are playing this movie. On that note this was the first time seeing it. I was reading these comments while watching this, I have to agree I wasn't impressed with it at all. I am going to give John Carter a shot. Everyone views movies in their own way, may like it. Have fun everyone.

reply

Just watched it on SyFy this afternoon :)

reply

Watching it right now on syfy, and it sucks :)

reply

Thank you someone one beat me to this.

I didn't think the story was that bad. Of course, I read Princess of Mars about 30 years ago. Since I've read so many books since then, I forgot where the book differs from the movie.
When I entered Princess Of Mars, they have another one in the works. It is due out in 2012. I'm probably going to want to see it when it comes out. Provided, that it does come out.

You entered her?? Lucky you! How was it? ;)

reading ERB's life path - gotta admire his success.

story line is exactly like john carter

reply

Well it is and it isn't. Princess of Mars didn't have moving cities, an evil Emperor clone and John Carter didn't have a dead wife and kid. Thankfully.

On the other hand John Carter does have four armed Tharks, Woola and keeps the original period setting which is a good thing. Too bad they went overboard with all that other stuff.

You know, I'd kind of like to see what Mark Atkins could do with a real budget.

reply

The scene in which you describe was actually in one of the books. Lucas stole it from the Burroughs books. I'm sorry for telling you this two years afterwards, but YOU FAIL!

reply

i had some goofy dui stint in some local jail -- had ?? 5 of his books -- thank god - and im atheist - since i incidentally am familiar with current knowledge Mars - it is a serious twist - still - anything to read.

reply

granted - a more "interesting" movie had they made it b4 Traci was 16- 18?? -- but then no one would bitch about its literary license - it'd be illegal to play late night on syfy.
