Only the bare bones of raymond carver's short story why don't you dance ? Carver's story didn't have the sentimental aspect with the kid and the neighbour. They had to flesh it out a bit for a movie I guess but I wonder what carver would've thought of it.

Involving the kid in the story has always been a turn off to me. I'm ok with the neighbor though, but the kid just makes it feel more of a family movie than a film about divorce and alcoholism.
