This movie reminded me of "Less than Zero" with Robert Downey Jr. It came out around 30 years ago but he plays a drug addict whose life just spirals out of control. Downey does a good job. Very depressing.
I'm only referencing this particular movie because I usually stay away from this genre so I don't know what else to compare this movie to.

You pointed out you stay away from this genre, but in case you want to see the two masterpieces that define the genre, the two films mentioned above are the go to flicks about alcoholism.
Quite enjoyed Everything Must Go, specially the part where Will is asking for beers outside the liquor shop, then drinks the last drops from the empty cans and says to the girl 'I just need a drink', he nailed it, I've done that and much worse for that last drop. Good flick.
Very depressing.This was a little bit more amusing than my recollections of Less Than Zero, which I haven't seen for quite awhile.🐭 share
