An Aussie film that does Aussie cinema...

...justice
The:
Acting was top-notch.
Cinematography was grandiose but not too pretentious.
Directing was pretty decent too.
Ending answers the big questions the build-up forces you to ask, but leaves just enough open to interpretation as not to spoon-feed you like you're a child (something too many movies seem to do).

This is the only film you have commented on on this entire board. Is the producer your brother in law?

Son, this movie stank on ice.

Any film that has a panther sub plot that goes nowhere is not a good film... This was yet another Australian film that filled me with shame for our industry.

C'mon mate, does every aussie film have to be a masterpiece?
That logic doesn't apply to any other film industry, the french, the yanks, they all make BAAAAD movies, in which people either learn their craft or get laughed out of the biz, so be thankful it got made at all. I know plenty of local film workers who haven't earned a cent this year, try and feed your kids on that before mouthing off in the safety of your computer room, the movie wasn't great but I've seen a lot worse...at least someone managed to get it from the storyboard to the screen and employ some people.

It was refreshing to see an entertaining Australian movie, as opposed to the usual depressing, grim domestic relationship dramas. I'd love to see more Australian action/B grade or whatever- a film that is set here that doesn't have to try and tap into some sort of national psyche or make a big deal about being 'Australian'. While it may not be a better film, its more like what I want to see in a western than a film like 'The Proposition'.

reply

I agree with pretty much everything you said, except I really loved The Proposition as well.
This movie was not perfect by any stretch, but I thought it was a lot of fun.

If you want an Aussie western, try The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, with the same hero.

Also try The Loved Ones, not a western, but a great Aussie film.
