The 'Yawning'.

This is one of those movies that starts off mysteriously enough. Making you think there is a good scene coming up around the next turn or over the next hill, but it never delivers. No ghost, monster or anything else is over the hill and in the next scene.

Just more nothingness!! No plot, no direction, no nothing.

Should have been named the, "Yawning".

I have to agree with you. I thought the premise was interesting enough, and I've read a ton of hate for the acting and dialogue, which is a bit harsh. My largest complaint, along with your views that the film has NO direction, was the completely absurd and odd placement of what was supposed to be 'character development'.

So a lunatic holds a family up, which they ultimately subdue, and everyone feels the need to talk about childhood pets and memories, or bring up dad's drinking habit. A madman is tied up in the kitchen but dad thinks its the perfect time to get upset about his son dropping out of college. What?

Also, after reading the review the director posted on here (who does that?), I don't even have to know the guy to be sick of him already.

I double that last sentence, homesick! It's absurd for the director to put up 'snippets' of reviews from small time zines or festivals that amps up his so-called 'masterpiece'.

This film maybe better off as a book because then, we can create a vision of what's going on in our minds. Film is meant to be seen and this movie lacks the substance that most viewers need.

For me, the not seeing (or even knowing) what if anything was out there was the scariest element of the whole thing. I do agree that much of the family angst was irritatingly melodramatic, for me it was subtext to greater evil lurking outside. I guess it really depends on how you approach this movie -- if you think it's going to be chock-a-block with hacksaws and machetes and zombie serial killers in the woods then you'll be disappointed (I enjoy those flicks too, btw) but it you accept it as something more existential as the nature of evil then it becomes pretty nifty and different for its genre. It's by no means a great movie but it was far better than I expected it would be and I do appreciate that they tried something beyond the usual.

I thought this movie was good, and got better...until the last 1/4. Now, I just adore "The Blair Witch Project", its on my Top 5 movies of all time.
Ditto "Paranormal Activity" and "The Entity".
These movies are terrifying because they keep the bad guy somewhat unseen.

So I don't have a problem with that concept in the slightest. But they also had the backstory of SOME kind at least, to back them up. We knew who, or what, the evil was in all these films. That IS needed to some degree, if you're not going to show the villain.

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
