odd release dates.

why is it that the screener was only JUST leaked, when this came out in 2009? shouldn't we have a proper DVD release by now?s.

reply

The film was shot in 2006, scrapped and the director re-shot in 2007 and added footage in 2008 and 2009. The film had a festival run from 2009 through 2010 and into 2011...20 festivals total, including 5 non-horror festivals...the film was picked up for distribution in 2011 by Breaking Glass Pictures for a DVD release on June 28th. All of this info is everywhere on their site and FB page and bloggers have been writing about the film since 2008...it was given Best Film of 2010 by two different horror bloggers and was on five Top Ten lists for 2010.

well, not everyone is going to have the attention span and intelligence to sit through a film that actually demands something of the viewer.

reply

hahahahaha. hey gregg, thank you for taking the bate. that was exactly the kind of answer that i was fishing for. thank you for proving to the board that you are either involved in the making of this piece of crap or hired to hype it up / defend it. funny enough i know what you will answer next as well.

since i am a nice guy i will give you some advice:

first of all you should check peoples voting history before making a fool out of yourself by throwing such rediculous statements around. if you would, then you had seen that on the top of my list the following movies appear: oldboy, hard candy, irreversible, dear wendy, pi, cache, bennys video, white ribbon, funny games original, thirst, lost highway, dellamorte dellamore .. etc. THOSE are hard to sit through and demand something from the viewer. applying your statement to some piece of crap c-grade local cable staton level horror movie is just as stupid as telling someone that they werent able to understand the deep sociologic statements that are deeply hidden in scream 3.

secondary you should not try to hype it beyond any reasonable level. there is good, there is bad and here is debateable. this one is not even up for discussion. there are movies that some people find appealing while some others might not, but if the general consens is, that a movie is abyssmal, as it is with this movie (just check the "honest" reviews over here) then the best that you can get away with is "if you have some time to kill and if this one is running on basic cable then you don't neccessarily need to switch it off". one thing that you can not get away with is telling people how incredibly great it is, at least not to people that have seen any quality movies before.

thirdly. holtgrewe, is that you? it is rather rare around here that the director himself takes he time to write down the synopsis himself and post it, like in this case. oh, i just checked and yeah, it is indeed you. wow, dude don't you feel a bit ashamed, coming over here, hyping your own stuff and then even have the cochones to tell people that did not like it that they are stupid? wow, that's a first.

so you won awards at the st.paul minnesota and rhode island international film festivals and some blogger named this the best horror movie of 2010? wow, that's almost like winning canne, isn't it?

while we are at it? why don't you explain to us why this movie has been delayed so many time? was the screener udience not satisfied? so, additional material had to be filmed, eh? why? please shed some light.

oh, and another thing: either give yourself a fake usename that does not give away a link to your production company if you want to remain anonymous or let people know who you are upfront.

Well, thank you for taking my "bate" as well.

Thanks for the advice, but, to be honest, it's not necessary...I'll take a released movie and pre-production on another as enough advice.

I'm sorry you didn't understand Dawning or didn't pay enough attention to get the subtleties, it's not for everyone, so I get it.

ha ha! yeah, it is like winning Cannes because Cannes and festivals like Sundance are the only ones that "matter" to the uneducated masses of film viewers.

and actually, five different horror sites put Dawning on their Top Ten lists for 2010 and two of them gave Dawning Best Film. It's been in 20 festivals...the awards have come from Solstice, Rhode Island and Las Vegas which is where it was given "Excellence in Filmmaking"...and if you just did a little research instead of taking the time to rip on the film because you're probably a frustrated "creative-type", it would add more credibility to your discussions. If being in 20 festivals, including 5 non-genre fests (just do a little research instead of downloading the film from a torrent site) means this films is not even up for discussion...and the 20 different horror sites/bloggers which have given it great reviews have nothing to do with me or anyone else involved with the film...but I suppose asking you to do a little homework before making false statements is too much.

the movie has been going through festivals since 2009 and first premiered in 2008 (again, do some research and get your facts straight) and the filmmakers wanted to add another scene and wanted to continue with the festival run...oh, and then they got a distribution deal...which is why screeners are sent out...pretty straight forward and simple.

well, as i already announced i knew in advance what kind of answer to expect. didn't take the tme to even attempt to dismantle any of my arguments, did ya? just As i expected.

yeah, it is truly hard to get into some minor festivals and its is really really hard to get some horror movie bloggers attention. from what you wrote that could easily also be about "das komabrutale duell", which was also terrible and also got a couple of good reviews along the way. even got picked up for a re release. also, i noticed in my lacking reseatch ;) that a lot of the bloggers thank you personally for providing the informations. kinda odd, dont ya think.

dude, you are the filmmaker. talking about THE FILMMAKERS. you wrote it, you directed it.

hahaha. as opposed to you i do not have a personal agenda here, sugarpie. watched a movie, it sucked, wrote it down, offended the director that in exchange acted like a little child who got his candy taken away from him.

and if YOU had done your research you might had noticed that the general response to your movie is all but positive and strangely the criticism generally aims at the same flaws.

as for your other "argument": even uwe boll gets the cash to do one movie after the other. that is no indication of anything.

dude, no offense, i understand that this is your baby and that you would like to think hat is the best and beautiful of them all, but a bit of self criticism would be more than healthy if you ever want to make it in this business.

oh and btw, i get my screeners in the post, so i might send you over a printed version of my review. ;)

sorry...i'm just a little angry about people thinking the filmmakers wrote the reviews and what not...the film has been getting a lot of buzz on the indie film circuit so it's a bit insulting...if people don't like the movie, fine...but it's worth noting there are many who do...and IMDB is about the worst site to gauge how good a film is...Goodfellas is just over a 7.0 for god's sake so the credibility of IMDB is in need of questioning when 15 year old kids can say whatever they want...it's like Youtube...the power speaks in who is getting their films released and who is not...

reply

well, the same goes for creating a blog or creating a website. at least the imdb is a well known outlet for all kinds of movie fans from all over the world.

reply

I understand you want your opinion to mean something, just like I do with my film...the difference is it actually takes skill to make a movie and it takes nothing to write a "review" of a film on IMDB. Good luck with your "reviews" as I'll continue to make movies and enjoy my creative life while you spew forth "reviews" which no one reads except for 14 year old boys who like tits and ass and gore. Good luck man.

reply

sweet attempt bro. actually it takes just as little skills to make a movie as it is to write a review. that is, if we don't care for the quality of the effective end-product. i actually care to deliver. how about you? funny enough writing is a skill that is part of the craftmenship that you claim to have mastered, while on the other hand you yourself claim that writing itself does not involve any skills at all. that actually explains a lot. combining that with your inability to receive criticism i foresee a bright future for you. ;)

oh, so you neither like teenagers, tits, ass nor gore? that reveals even more.

actually i am happy that you found a distributor, thats one guy more off the streets. hahahaahahaha. but seriously, you don't seem to be completely talentless, but this flick was a stinkbomb par excellance. you should get over yourself and read some of the reviews from the people that are not written by friends of yours.

just one more thing: dude, where did the 130 k usd go? i mean, 95% of your "movie" happens in a confined space. isnt hat usually supposed to keep the production value down? did you buy the cabin and the ground surrounding it?

Thank "God" for people like therefdotcom who actually take the time to intelligently embarrass fools, charlatans & delusional "filmmakers" (all one in the same) on this site!!

the horror genre suffers GREATLY from delusional filmmakers that hype their movies all over the net when they know deep their heart they make hugely sub-par productions. the distros are to blame as well as the whorish blog circuit and the trollish elfs who do the faux-reviews for lame directors like this one. it's all lies, fake sh!t. and they aren't embarrassed!!! it's become normal now! insane.

the ONLY compliment i can pay this director is the fact he Tricked me (and i'm sure others) with his dvd cover art, it looked decent enough to check out. wasn't the first time i've been lead-on and won't be the last. the covers keep getting better and the movies stay the lame.

there are A Lot of crappy "horror" movies out there from first time/independent directors and i can solidly say this is one of the lamer ones.

reply

oh dear. my simple question has turned into some major imdb f4ggo7ry.

reply

it's not f4ggo7ry, child. it's simply using IMDB for what's it's for!

i'd say the f4ggo7ry is the ACTUAL FILMMAKER posting hype and crying about Viewers comments, thoughts and reactions to his "art" (very loose term here)

reply

I love movies that make you think and have that certain artistic touch to it that you know will make the masses hate it but the few that understand appreciate it.

This film however, offers none of the above. Yeah, I get the metaphors and such in it but there not of the same caliber as films from such people as Bergman and the like. Heck, it's not even on par with the odd and bizarre concepts of Lynch! This movie was basically multiple concepts and ideas put together in too tight a box to contain them all and thus it imploded on itself.

reply

Agree. I'm wathing it right now on Netflix and it is one of the lamest movies I have ever seen. Even the soundtrack is trite.
