Who writes this god awful stuff?

Why did I bother to check this out? Terrible script; totally unbelievable and totally unlikeable characters. Australian TV drama and film writing is a wasteland of talentless hacks.

I agree that this TV Show is not as good as some of the better scripted television that Australia has produced. It is not very original apart from a couple of unlikely twists. The show seems to be trying to match a set of criteria that some committee has decided makes for prime-time ratings.

However, this show is certainly is no worse than a lot of the drivel that comes to us out of the U.S. or Britain. Furthermore, it is still ten times more interesting than watching something like Big Brother.

Perhaps writers in Australia (and elsewhere) are being starved of opportunities to practice and expand their skills due to the seemingly endless stream of mis-named and questionable quality 'reality' TV that is forced upon us these days.

It is grossly unfair to lump all writers into your "wasteland". If you think you can do better @nat63 I'm sure there are plenty of producers out there clamouring for quality scripts.

That wasn't very sporting, using real bullets.

Maybe I'm one of the few, but I actually like this series. To me the characters are likeable and believable, and appeals to me much more than any other cheesy series pumped out by Channel 7 and Channel 9.

I totally agree, I watched the first episode and knew I couldn't stomach any more! and can you believe the Deborah Mailman character? Sure, that scenario happens all the time in real life! and everyone just accepts it without any qualms. HA HA

reply

I watched it only to help me make it till Madmen. No I can't believe the Mailman character nor the couple who wanted an all naked birth. WTF! And please John Waters retire. Poor Don Hany looked so embarrassed.
Being single or single again is obviously the most important interesting challenging state of being there is. There are no greater issues facing humanity it seems than to be happily paired.

reply

AH HA caught you!
So you did watch the second episode, isn't it the one where the couple wants the naked birth? (no doubt for the sake of the baby of course). I only saw the preview scenes and made sure I didn't watch it.
Now no more watching or you'll be warped for life!

The show is good.

It's exactly what happens amongst real Australian families. Asher Keddie does well on the show!

Yeah you're right. When women age we need to get rid of them somehow... Just put them away somewhere so we don't have to look at their tired old faces anymore. It's so offensive that we have to look at and acknowledge people we find unattractive! Why is life so unfair?

Anyways yes you're right they're so irritating when they aren't attractive to men anymore; devoid of use, even. Who do they think they are, acting and existing when men can't even get boner over them anymore? Don't they realise how useless they are now? Stupid slags. What to do with them, what to do with them...

Perhaps women should just expire at age forty. Then we don't have to withstand their wrinkled faces anymore. Then men can just be around the attractive, submissive young women they want to be around. Women who don't have their own desires and urges, women who haven't found themselves yet, women who go with the program and look good doing it.

God damn irritating old slags polluting my tv.

I disagree.
Started watching under duress with missus because apparantly I "own the remote". I actually quite like it now. The Mailman character is a bit ordinary, but its quirky, light hearted and nothing to take too seriously, but rather sit back and enjoy. Love the Nina character (or is it just because I think Keddie is fit?)

Why do people come on here to complain?

I enjoy this show. In large part it's meant to be a comedy, so it doesn't necessarily have to be believable. With that said though, a lot of people can probably relate to messy family situations, awkward crushes, strange bosses and the like, so while it's exaggerated for comedic effect, the scenarios portrayed are not actually completely unrealistic.

At least it's a local show that provides opportunities for Australian actors and production crew - personally I'd prefer that to a lot of the imported crap and reality TV out there.

It might not be to everybody's taste, which is fair enough, but 'a wasteland of talentless hacks' is not really constructive criticism.

Bravo! And Asher Keddie has been praised for her performance in some newspapers that I have read. Kat Stewart is wonderful. Lachy Hulme as the freaky boss is awesome.

The real question is : Who the hell watches this crapfest? Surely the previews are enough to make you flick over to the SBS test pattern? Unattractive cast - Keddie's bland & featureless face, Mailman always looks like a black moonface Bert Newton in drag - completely unappealing story lines....why even bother making it?

reply

hmmm, I'm guessing Channel 10 executives thought the complete opposite of what you thought....and then ratings took over from there. And maybe don't attack Deborah Mailman like that. I've always thought she was wonderful.
