Connected to Antichrist?

I read somewhere that this movie is kind of a sequel to Antichrist but I mean,, maybe it's a false rumor but can anyone confirm?

No, it has no actual connection to Antichrist. They are standalone films although they are both part of the 'Depression Trilogy' along with Nymphomaniac created by Lars von Trier.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

So Lars von Trier created the depression trilogy so people could understand it better or something. Three movies but not connected at all, just made for this thing.

Cause I want to see this and Antichrist but I was thinking about waiting at least a few years with Antichrist cause it sure is something too much at the moment but I wanted to see this one quickly so yeah

But thanks! :3

You can go ahead and watch Melancholia first, it wont matter since their not connected. It's well worth a watch.

so I just watched it and it's not really what I expected

the whole time I thought it was pretty slow but it really made me think and now I really appreciate it

It certainly isn't your average sci-fi drama, I think a lot of people who weren't familiar with von Trier were expecting something very different and were ultimately disappointed. But Melancholia just gets better the more you think about it in my opinion, I thought about it for months on end and it's become my #1 favorite film. I'm planning to watch it again soon, it's such a beautiful movie.

Is there a lot of animal violence in this movie? I was a bit surprised in Antichrist to see some of those things. Funny, but I'm fine with people but just get all queasy when it comes to animals.

LVT's trilogy, while unrelated and not needed to be in sequence (except for Nymphomaniac I and II), deal with his own emotional depression and, I believe, his own personal issues. The three deal with various forms of depression, grief, loss, sadness. I like his use of imagery and actually can appreciate how slow his movies are, because when they do ramp up, they carry you for one hell of a ride.

No there's not.

There is a somewhat nasty scene of a horse getting repeatedly whipped, but it's not exploitative if that's what you mean.

Okie dokie, I'm not going to watch it. I actually started to watch it (good Lord that opening sequence, while quite beautiful and visual poetry, was so incredibly long),...but I did start to watch it. But there's so much heavy shaky cam work that I felt dizzy, I couldn't focus.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I wondered, when I saw the horse fall, (in the prologue) if something may have transpired around that. I'm a wuss when it comes to animals being hurt.

I felt the same during the intro, but that's the only time the effect is used i think. Yep the scenes are related, i would still recommend watching it and skip the horse scene. I could be overly sensitive to it as i grew up with horses (felt sick watching The Horse Whisperer for example). The horse is hit with a crop, so nothing quite as brutal as say a stock whip so yeah... still ugly to watch but can safely fast forward without it effecting the movie.

I'm sensitive about all animals, no matter what. But I do have a hard time with horses because I grew up with them as well. As a little kid I had a pony, then when I was 13 and could work started buying my own horses. I got to board them for free in exchange for taking care of a ranchers 3 own horses that his kids didn't take any interest in. So I was always around them. Lots of people had horses where I lived. They are such beautiful creatures...

I really do appreciate that heads up you gave me.
