Where was Rose calling from?

When Rose first calls she is not in her boyfriend's apartment. We know this because she says she walked by and didn't see him there. However, she later moves into the apartment and continues her phone calls. At this point is she not calling the same number? Her number? You can't do that or is it possible across time barriers? Or was she living in another place and using the apartment which may explain why Mary would have rented an apartment where she had been abducted to and severely burned in.

Yeah. I wondered the same thing. None of it makes any sense. And why did see keep the previous apartment phone number when she moved in. People do that?

I was equally wondering why Marry, if she doesn't want to leave the place, doesn't try to change the number.

Let's face it, we're talking a sci-fi element here, no point in trying to figure how it would work in the "real world"

This is just another reason that (I think) supports my theory of it all being in her head...

John talked to Rose on the phone, so if the entire thing is in her head, then what's the point? That would be the cheapest possible explanation and would at least need to be signaled somehow.

If you're OK with a phone that calls across time but can't call itself, then perhaps this works: Phones get a busy signal when they call themselves because they're currently in use. But when you call across time, chances are the phone's not in use so the call goes through.

If any part of the movie is supposed to be explained as just someone's imagination, then it completely fails because that is not clearly suggested anywhere, and would be completely unsatisfying, so I'm assuming the facts are as shown. I don't remember the timeline well enough to talk about John's time of death. All I'm saying is that I'm not bothered by a phone call to the same number across time that does not get a busy signal for the reasons I gave.
