Alice was insufferable

She actually expected that a grown woman with rent and student loans to work 5-6 months for free?

And, to make it worst, Liz, her supposed friend, didn’t tell her that?

What a joke that was.

reply

Agreed. Only a trust fund kid could take a "job" like that. Appreciated the way Emily gave it right back to her. Like she said, Alice never worked for free.

reply

I wouldn't even be mad at Alice. Whatever, it's her company.

She should have torn her "friend" a new asshole right in front of her boss though. Made her wait all that time knowing she was desperate and ready to move back to Buffalo with her dad, only to set her up for a 6 month unpaid internship without even telling her ahead of time.

reply

Good point. Liz is mostly at fault.

Still, a quick look at her resume and you would know that a 6 month unpaid internship is out of the question.

reply

New Jersey, not Buffalo, and step-dad, not dad. But yes, unless Liz didn't know that it was an unpaid position (which is unlikely but not impossible), not telling Emily about it ahead of time was a really shitty thing to do to a friend.

reply

Funny. No idea where I got Buffalo from. Thanks for the correction. :)

Emily had a felony assault, a DUI, was deeply in debt and just not the person who would inspire you to hire her. There are many other job contestants with a better resume. Employers do do background checks, social media checks, and credit checks before hiring. Where else could she get a job? Her job future is similar to that of an ex-con. Getting something really potentially fantastic in advertising with all of her baggage was giving her a chance and it's mind boggling for me, that she didn’t try. Just for six months at least. I didn’t like Alice and she was condescending. I don’t think she inspired trust either. But many internships are not paid or if they are, it’s lower than minimum wage unless it’s someone in the medical field. Some have stipends. She had $70K student loan debt and didn’t even finish school. She was lazy and felt entitled rather than spoiled. The thing is she’s stuck and it’s her fault. No one else’s. The rap sheet is worse than the debt. Who knows maybe in 6 months, she could have proven herself worthwhile and could leverage a better salary.
And as far as a friend to Liz, what would have happened if Liz’s dog was killed? It would be because of Emily; Emily was taking care of it. Emily didn’t think twice about how many lives she put in jeopardy and how many lives lost. All because she needed quick money. She was a walking bomb. Not to mention all the people she swindled. She’s not called Emily the Criminal for nothing.

reply

I am not saying Emily is a good person.

But how was she supposed to pay rent, food, utilities…ect?

These internships work for people living with their parents. Not for fully grown adults with adult responsibilities.

Emily was not being entitled or spoiled. Working for free for six months was not an option for her.

reply

Do the internship and work a second job for six months. See what happens. This fraud thing is only going to lead to prison or cost her her life. We know the end of the movie, but her future is really grim. Much worse where she ends up in the movie, because where she is is more deadly for those she crosses than she can ever imagine in the US. This was a good movie. Aubrey is an excellent actress and the story is fantastic. But Emily was a criminal before she was a criminal. She is exactly where she wants to be. She burns all her bridges and she is a death sentence for everyone who knows her. She landed on her feet and she is still doing it even with money she took off with which wasn’t hers. And she does feel entitled because she doesn’t feel responsible for anything. She can’t even understand what happened to her - “They keep taking from you and taking from you until you make the goddam rules yourself!” But she is the one.

Oh, and critics are saying this is the dark side of capitalism - Millennials who spend a fortune on education and graduate from college with no job, no prospects, and no guarantee of a future beyond bleakness and struggle. So there’s that.

reply

If anything it would be more realistic for her to continue working and take some night courses to finish college or find a trade.

With that internship, she’d he force to reduce her work hours. So, she might not be able to make ends meet.

The internship might work for some rich kid living with their parents. But not for her.

I am not saying she has to be a criminal. She was wrong and had other choices. But the internship was a non-starter.

I think I’m looking at this wrong. It’s better to just watch the movie and don’t judge her. We don’t know how Bond or Bourne (I guess we do on Bourne) got to be where they were. Whether Alice paid Emily or not, she was NOT going to complete this internship. It’s not in her character to be gracious or patient or grovel. This is why I say she feels entitled. She can’t handle a job where she would have to serve people. So working in a restaurant which pays well is out. She’d end up throwing coffee at a disrespectful customer AND stealing someone else’s tips.

The movie just shows how and why she got to where she was. And it’s really original and powerful. It’s very La femme Nikita in her education. If you recall that brilliant French movie where the handler leaves Nikita in the restaurant instructing her to assassinate the person at another table on her way out and then he had all exits blocked so she had to think on the fly on how to escape. Very similar. Do or die. That’s what Emily thrives on. Not morality or ethics or benevolence.

The thing is Alice had all the leverage. If it’s as competitive as she says, she could’ve given it to anyone, and most people would jump at the chance, because it’s not supposed to be for grown people with bills. It’s a way for college students to get their foot in the door in their chosen industry while they are still in college.

Emily is a college drop out with no experience, and no connections besides Liz, and a criminal record. Even getting an interview at this point is a long shot, because she isn’t qualified, and has red flags. Even with this, Alice seemed to connect with her at first, and may have taken a chance in her, but she ruined it.

Job interviews still come down to why should we give it to you over the other candidates. Other people are still working towards a goal, while she messed up and gave up on it. She just wants a handout.

Yes she’s a grown woman with bills, but that is her problem, not Alice’s. She isn’t owed a job.

reply

I thought it was a joke that Alice was from Hoboken and didn't recognize a Bayonne accent.

reply

Fuck Alice. I would've walked out, too.
