Deep question

Svetlana runs into the main bay with her oxygen tank. Clem and the Russian are no longer slumped by the door and she looks into the bay water as if the mini-sub is missing. And then we finally see her in the mini-sub floating under the ice (seemingly expired.) What happened?

reply

Lurch was gone. But, we saw Svetlana dead [?] in the Russian mini-sub... There's a difference between leaving you wondering and leaving you confused and that bit definitely left me confused... Did Lurch sink due to the damage it has received, or was someone still alive from among Stas, Clem and Raymond..? The confusion contributed to what was, for me, a rather unsatisfying ending.

reply

She faded away... onto the cutting room floor.

We don't need details, we need more Minnie Driver close-ups.

The sonar of the ship up top was also unable to locate her submersible despite not being within the lavafield. They also appeared to not really notice the nuclear reactor meltdown particularly.

You are saying there were two mini subs in the bay? One Russian and one American? I remember only seeing one, but towards the far left (from her POV) of the bay. She rushes into the bay and looks dead centre into the water as if astonished it has gone. Clem and the Russian have disappeared (continuity?)

Maybe there were productions problems, changed endings, and they had to use what footage they could.

Very confusing. This series reminded me of the movie "Lifeforce" but without the laughs.

reply

Svetlana escaped using the mini sub. However, without the helpful belugas, she was unable to find an opening in the ice above her, and so died from lack of oxygen.

reply

I know, Graham (see OP.) But it doesn't correspond with the aforementioned scene.
