Wow! This show has a lot of haters!?!

I don't get it. Seems like there is some sort of conspiracy to get this show pulled before it has even gotten off the ground. What's up with that? Where did all these "experts" on story writing, screen play and acting all suddenly come from and how come they are picking on this show before it has even aired two episodes? Seriously, do you think you can give a show a chance to at least air a few episodes before weighing in with posts like "utter, utter rubbish"? The show doesn't even have five votes yet?

I enjoyed the first two episodes and am willing to give it a fair chance. Wouldn't want to come off like a total idiot (who shoots my mouth off before I actually know what the heck I am talking about).

reply

I watched the first two episodes and will probably watch again tomorrow night, but it is very boring. I found myself drifting while watching the last episode. I know the show is also about relationships, so will have some sentimental duologues, but it's just missing the drama and action.

I don't think valid criticism and discussion is inherently a bad thing. You can enjoy something and still highlight its flaws. Or maybe you'd prefer a messageboard where everyone posts the same things all the time, and the discussion is entirely one-sided and about the parts we really really liked?

There's no need for you to feel defensive just because you liked it and didn't pick up on the same points. Most of us here, I would wager, don't hate the show. Personally if I hate something, I don't spend any time discussing it. However I think it does have a lot of lost potential, which is frustrating - it could have been so much better.

And yes, if the series was good the first episode would hook people in. You don't get away with "the first four episodes were crap, but the last episode blew my mind". The story should build up cohesively and with good pace and it's always going to be clear early on if it's not going to do so -- never mind that even if future episodes do improve upon it, the criticism for the first episode wouldn't become invalid as a result.

Wouldn't want to come off like a total idiot (who shoots my mouth off before I actually know what the heck I am talking about).

Too late :)

to be fair the thing that hooks me into this show is thats its terrible, absolutley horrific acting....but it makes me laugh and gets a rise out of me which i actually enjoy.

but dont get sensitive! if you think you would have trouble writing that tripe, then thats your problem. but its hardly quality writing, in fact its a mess.

anyhow i dont hate the show, but it will only get 2 stars from me, for comedy value, as i would never make myself watch this again once its over.

Yeah the acting is pretty amusing haha

I'm watching it to hate it more. Is that wrong?

reply

I'm going to buy the DVD when it comes out just so I can throw it in a bin.

Is that wrong?

Yes.

Throw it at the writers instead.

Does this show magnetically attract IMDb users called Gary, or what?!!

Noticed that myself. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say we were all in the same demographic and ended up getting named around the same time by suggestible parents who watched a lot of westerns.

Damn that was almost thought out, instead of just a load of hate hastily edited for grammar. You bring out the worst in me.

It could have been very good, but the acting is wooden and the science is really bad.

It is like Seaquest DSV crossed with Bonekickers (dont ever watch Bonekickers, it's the worst TV program I have seen in decades).

James Nesbitt makes me want to punch him in the face. He walks around mouth hanging open like a dopey idiot. For example the ship is about to blow up, time is running out, seconds to go. What does his character do? Go off looking for his wife, SLOWLY. not running, no hurry, just slowly walking with his mouth hanging open.

the asian guy, Sacha Dhawan and the girl, Antonia Thomas were absolutely awful

It's an odd one... Poorly written and very variable acting. But, I'm really warming to it... With just a little bit more effort, it could have been very good. But, the producers decided to go with a mediocre script and the actors have sensibly decided that they're not going to go to a vast amount of effort for something so poorly written... In some areas, it is very good... The underwater CGI is good and I have to applaud the ambition of the sets, even if it is slightly let down by the IKEA furniture and the pipes that look like they've just arrived from the local branch of B&Q.

I think it's the Mystery Science Theater 3000 thing that keeps me watching. I tune in religiously to rip the mickey out of it. There's just *so* much material to work with!

reply

Seems to be getting better. Ep 3 was really good. I urge all who gave up to give it another try.

Seems to be getting better.

Not in my universe!

But with only two episodes left I'll stick it out.

I am a HUGE Jimmy Nesbitt fan. When I heard the synopsis of this show I was excited to see it. Ep 1 wasn't great but I am opened minded and willing to give it a go. Ep 2, OMG so bad, I said I'm only going to continue watching it to see James Nesbitt. Ep3 - getting so bad (though the Russians making them leave was fairly good), I am now embarrassed for Jimmy and wish he never agreed to be in this truly awful show.
I like to tell anyone who will listen ;) about how amazing Jimmy Nesbitt an actor he is and has done some amazing shows. But this show is so awful I hope no one ever finds it.
Did the cast only do it for the big pay cheque? I hope it wasn't because they thought the script was amazing. There's many flaws with The Deep but the biggest of them all is the script.

reply

Wow! This show has a lot of haters!?!

Probably because it's bloody awful.
It started off well enough and seemed to be pointing towards some sci fi or monster of the deep plot but ended up being just silly.
How any of the crew of the Nautilus or whatever its called got thier jobs is beyond me as the strike me as being totally unsuitable for deep sea work. Especially the woman in charge who is an idiot. Martin Blanks DJ girlfriend Debi Newberry would do a better job in command.
And the less said about James Nesbitts suitability the better.

The most amazing thing about this is how any of these morons are still alive after episode 4.
The BBC usually makes decent drama but this is tripe of the highest order.
I will have to watch next week just to see what nonsense we are treated to as an ending.
Hopefully my segment of licence fee will not go towards making any kind of follow up to this sh#te.

BBC hang your head in shame......

reply

You know, I've been watching the show for all 4 eps I have so far, and I have been enjoying it.
At first I thought it was boring, but like some other posters here I'll watch anything with Nesbitt in it, so I stuck it out. Second episode, still a bit boring, but still liking Jimmy. 3rd episode a bit more into it, starting to get into some of the characters. 4th episode and I'm mildly hooked, and still utterly amazed at Nesbitt.

Then I come on these forums and see people bashing on the series like it's the worst thing they've seen ever. At first I was indignant, but I read some of peoples' criticisms, and its all absolutely true. This show is quite awful in many, many ways. Now I just laugh, and by heck I'm gonna watch the last episode even if it means my brain melting a little. Am I a sucker?

Still, I maintain that Nesbitt is fairly flawless in this.

And cut the actors some slack, they really weren't given much to work with, in terms of the dialogue.

I'm just happy Nesbitt is getting picked up more and more :) More of my Aussie friends need to know about this guy.

reply

I enjoyed too. It was well written, well acted and for the BBC the fx were good.

It looked like a good series.

Shame it turned out to be crap!
