Huge Fan of the Original...this was Unwatchable

I delayed watching this for awhile. I finally caved last night and watched it on HBO. Let me first say, that they really could have done something with this. Introducing Rusty's family (it would have been better if they actually used Anthony Michael Hall) and having Clark and wife making cameos COULD have worked. What they did here was a disgrace though. I knew within the first few minutes that this was going to be a complete mess. To make comedy work, it's got to be at least somewhat grounded in reality and have the characters in some real life situations. This wasn't. Sure, Eddie was over the top in the original, but at least the others actors kept it somewhat grounded. Literally, every character in this film was so far over the top and unbelievably stupid that I just couldn't make it through it. What a blown opportunity.

The car is the funniest thing in the movie.

I agree but I think people who've never seen the original may enjoy it. For me every scene was them trying too hard to be like the original. I did find the white water rafting scene kind of funny though.

Yeah I have some younger coworkers (they are early-mid 20s) and they thought Vacation 2015 was a funny film. I think they even thought it was wholly original and didn't realize it was based off movies from the 80s and 90s.

reply

I'm watching it right now on HBO. It's 10 minutes in and it's horrible.

reply

Yeah, it didn't take long to realize how bad this was going to be.

That is exactly what the problem with this movie and a lot of others. Characters have to be relatable to be funny and for viewers to have an interest in them. Obviously, this Griswold clan was not. And the sewage lagoon scene was enough to make me want to vomit, there is NOTHING funny about people wallowing around in human feces, sorry.

Life is always intense for a repo man.

Anthony Michael Hall is just too bulky these days. He looks like a guy who can kick serious ass which is the problem when you want a kind of a nerdy guy.

It's that man again!!

reply

But WHY does Rusty have to be nerdy? He wasn't a nerd nerd as a kid, so why does he become such a nerd as an adult?

reply

Correct. I never thought Rusty was nerdy in the original. He was a bit more nerdy I think in European Vacation.

reply

Agree 100% with the OP. The film was lazy and the humor was not even remotely funny.

reply

Why does this show, a spinoff of a classic, have to have so many cuss words in it. Even the kids are perverts. I hated this movie, but will always love the original one

It had its moments where I laughed. I thought it was clever that the little brother was picking on the big brother. But this movie relied way way way too much on the gross humor. They would hammer the joke until it just wasn't funny. Like the wife going back to the sorority. Cut the scene in half and it could have worked, but they just kept on and on with how gross it could get.
