can't american middle class families afford trips to Paris?

with $53k as Per capita income, I thought you guys could go to Europe every week. it seems odd they took that awful flight to Paris at the end as if europe was an impossible dream, after all the road trip was much more expensive.

This is a comedy where Clark or Rusty does everything wrong. Maybe they could, that's why the road trip is supposed to be funny. But the goal Rusty had was to relive his first vacation he had with Clark, his dad.

As a commercial pilot (even if it is for a small, crappy airline), Rusty makes much more than $50K. They're definitely beyond middle class. Rusty gave the explanation for the trip himself. He wanted to relive the original trip to Wally World from when he was a kid, so that meant taking the entire family on the road.

If anything, the Griswold's would be lower upper-middle class. Commercial airline pilot averages around $130K per year. They live in a large tract home with some 3000 square feet. If the mom doesn't work, then they probably just get by judging from what they have materially.
