Finally got around to watching it today

and it sure was pretty bad. I only slightly laughed at a few things. I don't know why they think a comedy has to just be crude humor throughout in every thing they make today. This felt like it was written by 8 to 12 year olds who have nothing but fart jokes on their minds. It made me lose faith in the makers of today's comedies. This made me think of the movie The Other Guys which was trying to be so over the top it ruined it. Did Millennials like this movie?

The original had plenty of crude, stupid and mean humor not just this one

I have never seen Chevy play a mean character. I think meaness is impossible for him. Crude and stupid sometimes but the main characters were always people you'd like in your own family.

So they changed it, so what? At least they didn't pull a Ghostbusters and forget about the original characters.

"Like my great grandpappy used to say, when life gives you booty, make bootyade!"-Big E of New Day

reply

They changed it for the worse, the crude humor was over the top unlike the original. The only way this would've been better is if they would've had Anthony Michael Hall play his older self.

The original Vacation was equally sophomoric but it goes to show you how intelligent humor was back then vs now. We are now in an era where everything is PC, humor is sterile. You can reach the edges and even make a social statement back then. Today, bleh. It's just slapstick. There is no rewatchability of this film vs the original.

^^^^This. And I think what kirispy just said explains WHY this movie didn't work while the original did. Yes, both had soohmoric humor, but it wasn't watered down by PC. And I understand you had to put Chevy in it but as an above poster said, it didn't work with him being mean. Do you think he would've acted that way in the original one? In those movies he was almost too nice, so when we do see him here almost every line he's being a real prick to everyone at the B&B and I just didn't buy it, either. Plus, I couldn't stop looking at his puffy face...

I TOTALLY agree with everything the original poster said. My dad and I just got done watching it so I had to come on here to see what the reviews were; we wanted to turn it off probably less than 10 minutes in, due to stupid genital jokes and little kid saying f-bomb..However, I am a Millennial myself, at 28 years old, and in my opinion, I think this kind of stupid immature humor is all that's left for today..there's not much else to work on. I hate it though myself, I don't think I laughed throughout the entire movie, but I watched it..and yes, I did watch the original movie, National Lampoon's Vacation, years ago, and I do find that much funnier than this movie, and knowing that movie did have, but only a few, F-bombs, this "Vacation" movie could have toned it down with the vulgar language.

Yeah just watched it too. Awful movie.

To answer your question, about how it sucks, and etc, is because, for 1, it was NOT made, back in the mid 70's to lower mid 90's(Like 96/97'.), when movies had a "heart and soul", now, they just try to make it, wayyyy over comedic and action and etc, I mean, 90% of the crap they make anymore, I tend to just ignore, unless it was made by certain producers/directors, as well as having certain actors, as well. Now for 2nd, more then 1/2 the cast, that originally played in the other movies, are not even near this movie, just Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, all the rest are those newbies, that try too damn hard, to compete with those from the past, that created the magic, that we loved so much!

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I did had a couple of laughs (especially with Charlie Day scene), but this is an embarrassment attempt to the original and it makes me worried for Spider-Man: Homecoming since it has the same writers.

However, I do not agree with "The Other Guys" comparison. It was by far, far, faaaar more superior than this bad film, and was a good comedy that was aimed to go over the top on purpose with it's plot.

Very funny flick , especially living up to the Griswold name
