The searchlight
What was the searchlight for? Was that a sort of metaphor? And where were them after they left the house? Any guess?

I watched this film a couple of years ago and loved it.
I watched it again this morning and I discovered that much of what was happening in the film had escaped me the first time; I enjoyed watching this the 2nd time around even more than the first.
Regarding the searchlight, it puzzles me too.
I don't want to spoil anything but I do have a suspicion that Zel's friend (the individual who was intimately connected with Frankie) had a hand in it.
This friend of Zel's understands the Spirit world and had a pretty good idea of what was going on in the house, and that it was draining Zel's health and future happiness. (Notice the scene where she visits the house but doesn't enter.)
