DAVID O'HARA SCOTTISH NOT IRISH

Someone here thought O'HARA's accent was Irish, but it is a west of Scotland/Glasgow accent, like Gerard Butler.
How many American viewers thought that he was Irish? I am Scottish and I like Americans but sometimes it seems everybody in America who is not black is Irish.

He sounded Scottish to me. Just like Jim Kerr USED to sound, lol

His mom is Scottish and his dad is Irish. He was born in Glasgow so his accent is Scottish. In other words he is all f#cked up. His buddy from The Departed, Mark Wahlberg, didn't do him much of a solid giving him a nothing role in an even more nothing movie. What a stinker.

Difficult for the untrained ear to differentiate Scottish and Irish. Just like it is difficult for non-Americans to detect the difference between a Southern (Mississippi, Alabama) and a more southwestern (i.e. Texas) accent. Very similar but different and to someone from Scotland, they would probably sound the same.

scottish? irish? is there a diffrence?

reply

Yes,everybody in America thinks they are Irish, despite the fact that the biggest single group of migrants to the US were German speakers from Germany and the Austro-Hungarian empire.

There are American who are proud of their Scottish,Welsh or even English backgrounds but the Irish angle always seems to win out.

If your question is a real one then perhaps you should do some research?,Scotland and Northern Ireland are parts of the United Kingdom, which also includes England and Wales.

The Irish republic, often called Ireland is an independant country,a member of the UN and the European Union.
Ireland is also of course an island,Ireland and Northern Ireland are both on the island.

reply

American? Mexican? It's all the same, right?

reply

No offense but only a Scottish like yourself would care... seriously this is so trivial. We're talking about a movie here.. not personal ancestries...Scottish, Irish, Walsh people they are all English!
In the US we're ALL Americans. Unless it's for a specific purposes we don't really separate ourselves by ancestry like Irish Americans or Scottish Americans etc....

reply

Just noticed your reply, take it you are trying to be funny?
English people are English,Scottish people are Scottish,Welsh people are Welsh, all are British,Irish people can be British or Irish depending on their outlook.

The idea that many Americans don't view themselves partly via their ethnic background is just silly, look at the presidential campaigns, candidates trying to appeal to the Irish=Americans or the Italian-Americans or whatever.

reply

rogue-jc, you are having a laugh, right? Let me skip over you factual inaccuracy (All British people are English?) and try to make an analogy you'll understand. You are American. Does it not irk you even slightly to be labeled Canadian? Mexican?? "In the US we're ALL Americans" - Congratulations! In Scotland we are all Scots. Not English. Or Germans. Or Saudis. Or even Americans. We are Scots, pure and simple. I can't make it simpler mate.

reply

I concur. It was definitely a strong Scottish accent. Stuck out like a sore thumb :)

reply

I think it's safe to say his accent wanders a bit.
