Masterpiece

Saw the film in Melbourne, Australie.
A comic masterpiece.
Ozon's best film so far.
The setting, cinematography and acting are superb.
Ozon is now the greatest film director in the world.
Remerciements, Monsieur Ozon.
Congratulations.

I saw this movie tonight. I'm a big fan of French comedies, but to me this movie was a dud. About 40 people were in the audience and there was a lone giggle or snicker here and there throughout. It wasn't terrible but there was nothing outstanding either. A standard, recycled plot and devices with nothing new or interesting did nothing to build up the caricature characters, so one never really cares for any of them. Has Deneuve had "work" done? Her face seemed incapable of expression and her character had so many shifts it was really hard to tell what was going on with her. After about the fourth Deneuve-Parapluie reference I was getting annoyed. I'll have forgotten about this movie by tomorrow.

steady on! you're getting a bit carried away. the film is only mildly entertaining

reply

Not a masterpiece by any means. The director got carried away having fun with recreating the 70-s ambiance and mingling with the monstres sacrés of the French cinema (Deneuve and Depardieu). It seems like it does not matter for Ozon what to make his movies about as long as there are a few huge names in the credits and some entertaining visuals on the screen.

I do recommend the "Making of" on the DVD - this is highly entertaining.

Well, that seems rather excessive... I just watched the first half-hour and I couldn't go further...

Mediocre at best.

I completely agree.

It started off promising, but got dragged down in too many memories of youthful indiscretions and pointless plot twists - she controls the company, no she doesn't, etc.

Masterpiece my ass. It was a slightly amusing movie in which nothing was ever particularly funny. That being said, I wasn't bored, but it wasn't a great movie by any stretch.
