Future Cult Film

I'm constantly dumbfounded by the 20-somethings of today who LOVE Space Jam, usually citing the fact that they watched it as kids for why they still watch it today. There was even a midnight showing in Los Angeles last month.

Xanadu (1980) was box office poison and a critical flop and now it's a staple of midnight programming.

I can think of hundreds of cheesy, bad, dumb (etc.) flops that found an audience decades after initial release.

Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure will be the same, given time. In 20 years or so, when today's babies become tomorrow's stoners, mark my words: this will have a cult following.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

It's already at that level, because current 20-somethings are the only people who have any interest in this thing. Kids actually watched Space Jam, so the love for that is (apparently) unironic. No substantial number of children are seeing Oogieloves. It will probably be discovered by them later, but there won't be any nostalgia attached to it.

I started to watch this movie last night and this is how I feel. I'm in my 20's and I found it to be so bad it was good.

I agree that this has cult film written all over it. Razzie nominee for worst picture? Check!, Box office Bomb? Check! Being so bad that it becomes enjoyable to watch? Check! Delusional filmmakers who were serious about their project? Check!

reply

Enjoyable? Yeah not so much, more like excruciating, I couldn't name a worse film if I tried.

The only way I'd watch this movie at midnight is if I were forced to at gun point.
Bad enough I'll be reviewing it.

I thought it was so ridiculous that it was kind of entertaining. Probably better with a drink or many in you while watching. It also has a creepy vibe to it that makes it unsettling.

reply

Yeah.

And I'd rather be watching Space Jam because its songs are better (IDGAF if R. Kelly is cancelled because his songs are the only way he will get released early).
