why Oscars for films people can't see?

I'm curious why there are still Oscars for live and animated shorts when studios don't play shorts in front of features?

Old movies, old radio, new books.

though short films are one of the least appreciated media out there, they are still an art film that deserves recognition.

studios may not play them in front of features often anymore (though Pixar has brought back this concept), but there are still ways to watch short films. I mean, obviously the internet, but film festivals are one of the few times when short films can get the full-theatre screenings of which they are worthy.

also, the Oscar nominated shorts this year toured around the country, so you could have seen them that way:

though I do also question why there are still Oscars for these categories, but for a different reason - because they never seem to nominate any short films that actually deserve the award.

In New York, MOMA and IFC has showings of all short subjects so people can watch them. They play just like regular movies (but all together) for some time so people can catch them if they want to. So I figure this must happen in other cities as well.

You can buy all of this year's Oscar nominated live action and animated shorts on iTunes. They are 1.99 each.

I saw the five Oscar nominated live action short films at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton yesterday. On Sunday 18th of April they're showing the animated shorts.

At least one of the short films, A Matter of Loaf and Death, was shown on television. (A Matter of Loaf and Death was broadcast on Chjristmas Day 2008, so why was it nominated for best short film of 2009?) The Irish film was made in association with RTE.

I would like to see more short films before the main features, especially if it's a short feature (less than 90 minutes), although when cinemas do put on a short film it tends to be something less than ten minutes, whereas these filmes were all over fifteen minutes long, and one was over twenty minutes.

You can still watch lots of high quality shorts, just not in the multiplex. You can find them at film festivals, websites, and even on DVD. I went to a showing of the Oscar shorts on Sunday. They showed all the live action and animated nominees, along with a few additional interesting finds. It was put on by Cincinnati World Cinema (http://www.cincyworldcinema.org), but I'm sure you can find similar opportunities in most major cities. If I find anything else, I'll post it here.

I'd recommend tracking down "Logorama" and "A Matter of Loaf and Death" if you can; they were both wonderful animated shorts that caught my attention at the showing. Enjoy!
