Not crazy about the 6 year jump ...

So ... what is Judith about 9 or so now? She is annoying as hell ... well, at least this first beginning look at the new TWD order. What kid has the moral authority and strength of will to order around adults like that ... it was very irritating, and totally unrealistic.

Is that what they mean by jumping the shark? I don't see any good that is going to come by springing this already formed child on the audience ... it doesn't feel right to me.

What about you?

reply

I think it's all right. They did the same with Carl in the comics, but since he's not on the show, they need someone to take his storylines

reply

I don't read the comic, so I can't really give much weight to them or care about them much. I can just go on the way the story feels to me having watched years of this saga.

I did not like Judith in this episode. I hope that will fall in line and get better, but in general I hate the never-ending parade of unruly kids on TV, and particularly here where it would really go over so badly. Someone with this terrible attitude, and I'm talking about Judith here, would have been dead or a pariah a long time ago, so it ruins the story, or makes it hard to buy into.

Essentially, what they are doing here is building on our attachment to the brand of TWD in order to push us to watch a whole new show that is the same, but totally different, and so the continuity and sensibility of the characters are a kind of key aspect of that, don't you think?

reply

What they're doing with Judith, I find it interesting enough to want to see where they go with her. Their long term plans seem to be to bring in younger cast members and younger audience. I expect the actors from the early seasons will start cycling out, or be reduced to recurring roles. They have already brought 2 actors from The 100 (though 1 is already dead), plus Alycia on FTWD. It changes the dynamic a bit, mixing old and young characters.

One thing I liked from this episode is when Magna's group sees Alexandria for the first time and become amazed. It was a lot like when Rick's group first went into the gates. But this time, everything inside was built by our group, and we know what they had to go through to make that happen.

reply

Alycia ?? where, who, as an actress or as her character?

reply

She was a main character on The 100 for 1 or 2 seasons but left when she got FTWD. The actress who plays Magna was also on The 100.

reply

Oh, I thought you were talking about something on Fear The Walking Dead.

reply

Yes, agreed.

reply

The worst thing about the time jump to me is explaining why an alive Rick hasn't managed to find his way back or communicate somehow that he is still alive...I guess it will be covered later..at some point..but for now it's still a gaping hole.
In other ways it's good because it does age up the kids, jump start some changes and we didn't have to linger a whole season over their grieving process.

I don't mind Judith..I do think she feels a little generic right now but she doesn't really annoy me and the fact that she exists as a continuity of Ricks is a good thing. At her age she won't be bearing the weight of the show anyway. She's too young.
Likewise, Michonne and Rick did have a son...a good thing but predictable. They'll probably end up having to age him up by the time Rick becomes aware of his existence.

And I don't see peoples response to Judith as bending to her "authority" as much as people holding her in high regard because of her father...and mostly knowing that her wishes will soften Michonne and have an influence on her. They know they can get away with bending rules if Judith is on their side..It's a good thing she's not a psychopath.

Right now I'm more worried about getting invested in all these new characters...and whether or not they can keep from repeating all their old mistakes on this show. I know they're using these kids and the few remaining survivors for continuity to get us or keep us looped in.
But I guess I'll have to see if it works for me

> The worst thing about the time jump to me is explaining why an alive Rick hasn't managed to find his way back or communicate somehow that he is still alive

yes, exactly. when i expressed that sentiment the trolls jumped all over me.

> as much as people holding her in high regard because of her father

I don't see that really happening. But I also see Michonne as over-reaching. Her authoritarianism in the meeting and all.

I am resolved to watching it ... but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it. ;-)

reply

I still don't understand this sentiment at all. There are so many sensible reasons why Rick might not have returned, you could write a book... or a few screenplays about them. You assume "Rick = alive" means "Rick = free" or even that Rick is still Rick. Might be in a cell like Negan. Might have woken up with amnesia. It's... not an issue.

You remember how Negan was trying to break/brainwash Daryl so he would join the saviours? Give it a year or two.. and he would have broken. So would Rick. Something else to think about. Like I said.. thousands of possible explanations and storylines here.

reply

OK, so you don't understand it.

reply

Agreed. Rick is clearly being held against his will or whatever numerous other reasons could explain his absence. The helicopter guys trying to condition him or whatever.

No way is he free and has just decided to sack off all his friends and family.

"6 years"...

And Michone's kid looks to be 4 years old... wtf?!

Someone in production needs to stop making rookie mistakes. I thought it was a 3 or 4 year by the looks of Judith, Darryl, and Carol... but they show a friggin INFANT in Michone's arms...

I don't buy 6 years!

reply

Well, including gestation it would be more like 5 years old for "RJ"..But he did look pretty small in that glimpse I got.
Maybe we'll get a better look next week.

reply

6 years seems too much....

Darryl would be all UNABOMBER'd out, instead of looking like: "Oh, Darryl went off the grid for a few weeks!"

IDK... I'm not trying to nitpick! I love these last two epiode more than anything in three years!!! So, I ain't beefing....

And I LOVE JUDITH! I think she's friggin nails! She's NOT annoying like some dingleberries have claimed!

I guess we'll see...

reply

Why do you have to call people names? A little entitled girl that cannot folllows rules is not cool in reality.

reply

This is a TV SHOW, not "reality".

I think we checked that off the list as soon as "the undead" started walking around...
I think it's silly!

I think the same people who think Judith is "annoying" are the same people who want Neegan to be your boss now that Rick is gone...

bottom-feeders...

I could be wrong... nothing but God is absolute...

And I can admit to bottom-feeding once or twice, so I ain't saying I'm better...

deal

with

it.

No wonder you resent it when people call Judith annoying, you are standing up for annoying people like yourself. You've probably been this annoying ever since you were Judith's age and not bright enough to understand why or change it, so you run around with a big chip on your shoulder and promote being annoying like it was a big positive. I think it is you who cannot distinguish reality. Anyway, thanks for the nice little chat, I am now going to put you on IGNORE, because you are so annoying you cannot have a clam rational discussion due to your mental issues.

reply

You're not meaningful enough for me to "resent" you... lol

How pathetic are you? You get all annoyed b/c I disagree...

You're a fkn retard. I'm laughing at you.

"ignore"...?

cool. peace. DINGLEBERRY.

lol

reply

It is different. I'm not sure what I think or feel yet.

These themes bother me:

For like the 20th time the show took the lame take of "should we be hard ass and not trust anyone in order to keep ourselves safe" or should we be "welcoming and helpful to those we encounter and risk them being evil" Didn't Rick and everyone waffle back and forth for 9 SEASONS!? Well, that isn't enough.....hard ass Michonne and open armed, trusting Judith.

The zombies are still an issue? 9-10 years of rotting and decaying and the world is still replete with mobs and herds of fully able and functional zombies? No, that's stupid I don't buy it. Those things should just about be gone now. Maybe just a few stragglers of zombies from people that newly died.

STILL? Still no new world forming, with a fledgling government and resources? The living haven't joined up to form the new USA from the ashes? It is still just a few pockets of communities in Virginia with no clue what is happening a few miles away in each direction.

I don't really buy these themes for it being 10 years after the outbreak.

reply

I agree with a lot of your points..Why are there still so many walkers (I suspect because too many people like them and their continued existence)?
The waffling back and fourth about trust and non trust bothered me too but supposedly there's going to be some stuff that has happened in that 6 year interval that's affected Michonne's trust issues (related to that X scar on her back)..

There probably is a new world order forming...and a fledgling government...but they live like the old west and haven't ventured out to find out (I guess we can relate this to the conversation between Gabriel and Rosita about trying to reach out with the radio signals and them thinking Michonne would consider it a security breach. Maybe last time they tried this it ended badly.)

Of course I'm giving the writers the benefit of the doubt...But if they haven't already written and/or outlined and have a good idea of when these other films might be filmed and might come out then they may lose everyone's trust.

reply

not a fan either - they just did a hop skip and jump over Fear the walking dead i guess Morgan is stuck in FEAR show for 6 years as well?
