I think they were setting the table in last night's episode for that guy to be (VERY) key in the "cure". It was very telling when he asked Maggie if there was a medical lab of any form available, and told her he had medical experience. Plus, when Carl was dying, he said his mother told him he'd beat this world. By saving that guy, he may inadvertently still end up doing so.
