Nobody likes it anymore, But nobody can agree on how to "fix" it either.

Here's the thing; despite all of it's faults NOBODY has any ideas on what will improve the show cause nobody can agree with anything within the fandom. They could follow the comics closely but i feel that'll just cause more problems cause the show borrows heavily from the books anyway. So going even further into book cannon might not save the show (at least not for non comic readers). The only SAFE thing they can do would be is to get rid of the mellow drama, and just make a hour long show about zombie slaying with some character development sprinkled in. And have Clementine show up....i'm dead serious. I felt Fear The Walking Dead had a interesting premise until they didn't stick with it. Likely because of budget constraints. But i always felt a good spin off should have been a anthology show set in the early days, or during the outbreak.

I think many of us who are dismayed at the show's decline agree that the writing is flawed. The characters are behaving uncharacteristically. The plot has become silly and implausible. The show runner, Scott Gimple needs to be replaced. These all we are in agreement with.

I am glad they are following the comics. I don't think they have to have "word for word". But I like that the writers have source material. I don't want the TV show to stray too far from it.

The problem is that the upcoming arc with the whisperers is stuff that people are complaining about with Negan already. If they're bored with human conflict they're going to hate The Whisperer's arc

reply

I think they need a new purpose and plot line, not the same rehashed one of "find a safe place, take it over, defend it". I said it in another thread, but move on to DC, let's see what the capitol looks like, and what the remnants of the govt/military are.

reply

I agree!

This would keep me watching!

reply

That's sorta what it looks like they are going to do. The group is done with moving around, after they get Negan out of power they will rebuild and have 4-6 communities who live in peace and as a whole, are self-sufficient. To find anything in ruins, they will have to do it through small scouting groups who fan out to explore, mostly looking for new groups of survivors to network with. Before the Whisperers come along, the main conflicts are internal- people who are not happy with Rick or Maggie's leadership and try to replace them. Also some internal drama at the Kingdom and the Sanctuary. I hope they don't spend too much time on it with the show and instead, maybe focus more on the rebuilding in the years that were skipped in the comics. I don't see the show keeping too many of the cast members around past season 10, so they either overhaul the show or end it.

reply

Bring. Back. The. Gore.

Even if the writing sucks, the gore kept it fun and gave the show its edge. It used to feel like anything could happen. Now it just feels sanitized.

reply

Oh I agree, but after the Lucille deaths , AMC toned the gore down because of complaints.

reply

Removing the gore made the show boring! Sure, they could have toned it down, but they just got rid of it completely!

reply

yes, they sure did, along with all the zombie fear! For god's sake , it's called the walking dead!

reply

"Here's the thing; despite all of it's faults NOBODY has any ideas on what will improve the show" Yes, we do, get better writers.

reply

Or just cancel it.

reply

I agree

reply

Totally agree, cancel the crap.

There probably isnt a way to fix it, it has had 8 season for a subject that is generally covered well enough in a 2 hour movie. The story has been stretched past its breaking point, at least that's my thoughts. I do not believe new writers can fix it, because they would still need to work within the current tired universe.

reply

To be fair when Kirkman launched the comic that was the point for it to be a on going story about survival, so people knew what they were getting into. It works in the comics, because it has a brisk pace. Like mentioned before it probably would have worked better as a anthology series.

reply

Honestly I'm not sure it can be "fixed" at this point. I know that probably sounds like a defeatist viewpoint (especially from someone who's been a big fan), but I care more about quality than quantity. I'd much rather have a high-quality show that lasts just a few seasons than one that drags on until it becomes stagnant, which is what's happened with TWD. Many of the episodes are simply there for filler, the "story" (I put that word in quotes because I don't think there is much story anymore) has become monotonous, the characters' personalities go back and forth, randomly, between extremes... The show is limping around with no direction in sight, which I think is a clear sign that it's run out of gas and needs to come to an end.

I think an anthology series would be a good idea, and truthfully I think end-of-the-world survival shows would, in general, work better as anthologies. For example, you could show different sets of people surviving in different ways and in different environments, giving a wider range of possibilities and a more encompassing view of what the world's become.

reply

Well, the internet anthologies that ran during season one ( I think) were ok, but I love Rick and the gang. That's who I want to see. But, you're right, the show is stagnant and characters are behaving out of character with previous seasons.

reply

how about less episodes. this would cut down on the boring, filler episodes.

how about not killing a lead character every season. after awhile, you just stop caring.

reply

That's kinda impossible given the setting. People are already complaining about Game of Thrones being safe and not killing off enough characters in season 7.
