I only watch for Duke (Eric Balfour)... he is so manly....

Funny, so many posters seem to hate him. Why?

reply

He's a good looking guy who is undoubtedly talented but he's a bit of a freak in real like. Maybe it's the Scientology that made him that way?

reply

Me too!I watch for Duke, the only character I am still interested in

reply

Same. Nathan and Audrey make each other so boring that I was like keep Mara lol.

Eric has always been talented.

reply

Maria,

I can't watch Audrey and Nathan together anymore. Besides being incredibly boring, they also spew the worst dialogue on the show.

He a good actor for sure

It's not all hate, sure there's been some (for all characters), but there is also plenty of indifference. I, myself prefer the more nobel and serious types. I think Lucas Bryant is a great actor and a good person in general. I empathize with his character and the way he has to play a stoic, non-feeling person. To me, he's VERY masculine and tough as nails. He IS a cop, which needs to be played in a more serious manner, so I get him and appreciate that. I have also thoroughly enjoyed Nathan's relationship with Audrey and find it romantic, timeless and sincere.

There are plenty of other good actors, past and present on this show. All make it worth watching. Adam is a doll in person, Jayne Eastman and Glenn Lefcheck are a few others that are wonderful people in real life. Loved Kate Kelton too. So many people to watch for, but I know everyone has their favorites, which is fine.

I'll actually be happy when this show is over though. I want to see it end well and then watch the actors move on to other (separate) things. Then this message board will hopefully dry up completely.

Here's what happened...

The NEWEST writer, a DUKE shipper (which as a published author with friends in TV...including "Haven" can tell you, is a BIG no-no!) decided to make Duke the centre of everything. Then, she proceeded to work on storylines that turned "Nathan" into nothing more than a side character and a lapdog. When the show had the three of them working together...Nathan and Audrey with Duke as their friend and Nathan's foil, it was MAGIC. However, pushing Nathan aside and putting so much focus on DUKE angered A LOT of fans, who happen to be DEMO aged fans. That's what turned it into a shipping war. It wasn't always like that.

We've had more backstory on DUKE than anyone else. Almost NOTHING on Nathan.

Audrey has made it 150% CLEAR that she ONLY LOVES NATHAN (romantically...no matter what you want to read into things). NATHAN is the "way to her heart" guy. Yet, we keep having to have these discussions about Duke and Audrey. There IS NO Duke and Audrey! Let's give Duke a TRUE LOVE! I'd LOVE to see the guy happy! Seriously!

The whole sex with Mara thing...HUGE MISTAKE. HUGE! You couldn't have made people more angry and divided if you tried! The only way, would have been if he had sex with Audrey. Duke betrayed Jennifer's memory. It was a SICK, twisted way to have sex with Audrey...AUDREY who is his ONLY FRIEND IN THE ENTIRE WORLD'S love and mother to his son!
WRONG. I don't care how emotionally messed up he was...is he THAT weak? No.

That said, Duke is responsible for all the town's new Troubles. Will he be the villain Nathan was? Probably not. Will Nathan defend him? Of course. Nathan always does; deep down, he does. He defended him against Dwight, and Duke didn't even ACKNOWLEDGE that. Instead, he BASHED him over the head with a wrench and could have killed him at some point.

He claims to care for Audrey, but not enough to bring Mara back. Nathan wanted to save them BOTH...Duke didn't care. He won't get vilified for that. Everyone will say, "AW! Poor Duke!".

THAT'S why people hate on Duke. It's the inequality in the way the two characters are treated. It didn't USED to be that way. Seasons 1 & 2, it wasn't. 3 They were all more equals, but Duke had more of a standout role that season. By 4...it was over. Nathan was thrown under the bus. He was "selfish" because his heart was breaking, he just found out he had a son and he was shot and GONE. The love of his life was GONE. His "father" was gone (dead end of season 1)...he was HURTING and UPSET and he shot Howard. He had NO IDEA the Barn would be destroyed! He just was trying to stop Audrey. He had wanted to go with her. Duke (on Audrey's behalf) wouldn't let him. He took responsibility. He lost everything. He wanted to fix it; he was willing to DIE to fix it. Yet he was and IS still viewed as SELFISH. However, EVERYONE will immediately forgive DUKE and feel bad for him. Double standard. People are TIRED of it.

So, again, THAT'S the problem. It was created, it doesn't HAVE to be there. Hopefully, it will go away and everyone will play nice again because the show works BEST when Nathan and Audrey work together with Duke. However, it IS Nathan and Audrey WITH Duke. Not DUKE with Audrey and Nathan. The writers need to not play favourites and write for everyone on the show. Then, we wouldn't have these issues and divided fandoms!

Ditto to all you and Sarah have said. Nathan is more than "manly" and his serious demeaner is what you'd expect of a person in the position he's been placed in. Cop, trouble solver, protector of Haven and partner to Audrey. They have made a great team since day one, romance or not. Though I only ever saw her with Nathan, as cops and crooks really don't go well together. Not to mention, Nathan never gave up on bringing Audrey back. Duke and Dwight were certain she was gone, even going as far as calling Nathan a liar and blind, proving no one ever knew her better than Nathan did. The other two ended up letting women cloud their judgement, though they ended up doing worse, especially since they were women they'd just met.
