They kept him alive because they didn't want to kill the boy in the movie. They wanted to send the message that the good boy is different than the evil serial killer.
It makes no sense if they want to be consistent with their version of time travel. Why was Cuba so upset about killing him if he would still be alive anyway?
I was okay with the movie until the little boy showed up. It ruined the whole thing for me. If the little boy is still alive then the older him can still come back since he will be alive. The boy will still grow up with the same mother and aunt so he will still be very angry.

He explained that with the death of the boy, all of the deaths were reversed... including the boy's. The boy's death occurred during one of the time traveling episodes, therefore he is still alive in the other "universes". hope that helped.

Yes but the other posters are correct. He still has his junkie mom and aunt, so he could still be angry and still invent the time machine. Who is to say he didn't? I am still confused.
