DO NOT try this at home!

People, PLEASE do NOT try to use your knife the way Rob teaches Kate in this movie (at about 00:48.00). In this scene, he instructs her to "... keep your finger on the blade..." and then you see a shot of his hands, showing his left index finger aligned along the top of the blade's spine.

Really???

This is totally improper technique, and you are more likely to cut yourself if you cut this way! This grip doesn't give you good control over the knife, and it can wobble unexpectedly when you put pressure on the food you're cutting (especially if the food is hard or slick), and then you're bleeding all over the food, the knife, your cutting board. Not fun.

You can see a proper grip in this video, at about 1:20
(http://allrecipes.com/video/38/how-to-master-basic-knife-skills/detail.aspx).
"Grasp the blade of the knife with your thumb and forefinger, where it meets the handle. Think of pinching it between your fingers in an "OK" sign. Rest the handle of the knife in your last three fingers. Don't place your index finger on top of the blade."

I can't believe that no one on this movie (writer, director, actor, consultant, no one) researched this to make sure they were demonstarting PROPER basic technique demonstrated, because people see stuff like this in the movies, and they assume it is correct, and the information gets lodged in their brains unconsciously, and they end up believing that they now know how to do it correctly. Argh!
