They need shaky cam to cover the fact that it's a bad movie.
It's like those crappy fake "reality" shows on TruTV... like faker than normal reality shows, genuinely and admittedly scripted shows about repo guys and stuff.
If they aired those as scripted shows like "Hey, this is sit-com about a bunch of repo guys!" people would realize that they suck. But, because a lot of people don't realize it's scripted and think they're watching something real, they're more forgiving of it. They don't expect the polish and quality of a better sitcom.
Same idea here... Because people suspend disbelief and buy-in to the "found footage" premise, they're more forgiving of the weak material and low-budget production.
