SPOILER ALERT! - Why was Reid standing in the middle of the road?

....Reid goes missing during the party and Darrin and Ben eventually leave the party without him. Later on the way home, Darrin and Ben "run in" to Reid standing in the middle of the road for no apparent reason. Reid offers no explanation for why or how he got there. In fact, Reid appears to be in a trance like state. But the bottom line is, Reid never offers an explanation for disappearing at the party and ending up in middle of the road. Or maybe that whole scene was a McGuffin. Jus wondering...

I thought this was an indication that Reid had been a victim of alien abducted.

You can't palm off a second-rater on me. You gotta remember I was in the pink!

It's explained later in the film when Ben asks why Reid needs to get inside the base so badly, that Reid was abducted that night at the party.

He's not even in the middle of road he's way off to the side like in one of those pull out areas. So they drove way out of their lane to almost run over him and be clear of the roadway. :)
