Difficult to like lead character

I agree with other posts about the character development in this movie. It was difficult to find sympathy to someone who showed no gratitude to the person helping her in a very difficult situation. She was next to living on the street when she dumps herself in Nona's home. If it's that bad for you - go somewhere else!
I get perhaps this was probably a form of punishment on her mother for all the years of alcoholism she had to witness. Must have been difficult. But there was something about the character I disliked.

I agree with not liking LaShay very much. She was difficult to like. I've never dealt with her situation, but I understand it can be incredibly traumatizing. I really felt for the mother because she tried to have a conversation with Shay about her feelings and about the past, but she kept turning away and shutting her out. It takes so much energy to be angry and Shay refused to let some of that anger go for a good deal of the movie. She didn't even try, but chose to wallow in it. I've dealt with a great deal of hurt, too and after a while (a couple of years) I just got tired of being sad and angry and decided to take steps toward a more positive life. It just really irks me when people only want to express their anger, but never try to find peace. I know the character had years worth of hurt, but, geez. Having said all that, I loved the movie. I thought the actors did a fine job portraying their characters.

Oh, please. Her mother destroyed her childhood, never really even acknowledged what she did - and Shay is supposed to be GRATEFUL to the woman?

Poor Shay. She was so hopeful when she went to the service. She thought her mother would FINALLY admit and face up to the abuse she put Shay through - and she got to watch a bunch of people kissing her mother's ass because the woman finally pulled it together enough to stop drinking and take care of the LATER kid.

News flash - just because someone improves their life by getting off drugs/drink doesn't mean the damage they did is somehow cancelled out.
