why did they walk when they had carriages?

The beginning they were almost all walking instead of riding in carriages.

reply

The carriages were loaded with their stuff.
Remember when the guy fell sick, they had to clear room for him in one of the carriages.

They also wanted to reduce the load the animals had to pull, since they were working in the heat with limited water. Remember them disposing of some non-essentials from the wagon, like the clock and the rocking chair, in order to reduce the weight? They wanted the draft animals to survive the trip as well.

Tell me the truth. Are we still in the game?

reply

What everyone else said, but also because who would want to ride in a wagon for the entire day, especially on a months-long trip? The pilgrims needed to get out and stretch their legs, and they needed the exercise of walking around sometimes so they didn't get weak. I imagine that walking around also kept them from getting too bored. Space and weight in wagons was limited, so most of their possessions were related to survival (food, spare wagon wheels, clothing, etc.) There wouldn't be much to occupy them in their wagons except a Bible.

The wagons had no shock absorbers and were nothing but jolting all day long. Those who had to ride due to illness or injury suffered terribly and walking was not great either.
