I already miss the Olympics

this thread is really just to dilute all the angry/hate threads about the olympics/canada/nbc's coverage(which really did suck) but still The Olympics are an amazing event. Canada should be proud (and what a way to end it with the best hockey I've ever saw)

I can't wait for the London games. I hope Sir Paul is involved somehow. and of course we have Russia (Putin will go all out for sure) and Rio de Jenero (probably wont be a good two weeks for the war on vd) to look forward to.

I was just thinking that today, myself. Even though NBC coverage was quite poor, I really miss turning the olympics on throughout the day and night, I enjoyed the amount that I was able to watch.

reply

I miss it too. London will be epic. 2 more years baby.

why...why?

reply

I too miss the Olympics, and miss watching during the day and night for two weeks. But I recorded it all on dvd's and vhs, I will be watching it all over again.

reply

I miss it too!

I'm actually ready to move on to the future. I'm looking forward to the figure skating World Championships in Torino in a few weeks. It should be really interesting.

I heard Russia canned all the coaches from the 2010 games. I'll bet they're going to put on a bigger push than we did for medals for 2014. Talk about pressure for the Russian athletes...

Are The Figure Skating World Championships going to be on NBC or Universal Sports? because I don't have Universal Sports.

reply

NBC had them last year, the year before they were on Oxygen. I don't have Universal Sports either but I sure hope that we get them somehow. We didn't get 4 Continents or Europeans either which pissed me off.

Lysacek won't be there because of the stress fracture in his ankle... Too bad, I was looking forward to the rematch.

As to President Medvedyev asking for the resignation of the people behind the athletes, I haven't heard much about that except for one statement from ESPN. I certainly have concern if Mishin is one of those being asked to resign. Plushenko has been his student for almost 17 years. He's like a second father to him. It would be very sad if their partnership were forced to an end... (though it might be the best thing for Plushenko, I've long wished he would have Ilia Kulik choreograph for him)

I miss the Olympics, because now Jay Leno is back on air.

I watched Lindsey Vonn on Leno last night, and she will be on Ellen today.

I sure hope we will get to see the Figure Skating World Championships somehow. I wanted to watch the Skiing World Championships but they are on Universal Sports this weekend.

apparently Evan Lysacek is going to be on Dancing with the Stars? Interesting. I think he'll be good, but I don't watch that show.

why...why?

I think the SG's will continue to decline with the enormous cost and security concerns. Athens/Gre is now a bankrupt country. London could be great but a bit tense for everyone.

The WG's I see as a telegenic spectacular celebration of the Northern Hemisphere. It's more manageable and comes at--Feb-- a perfect time. I just wish it could be based in Norway as a permanent location to save money and have perfect atmosphere.

He's also doing Stars On Ice which is interesting for me since I THINK they are at the same time. He's under contract from both I believe.

I bet we won't see him next year. That stress fracture is going to take an awful pounding throughout the next few months. Since he's had it all year, and Stars On Ice runs from April to June... Not a lot of time to recuperate before next season.

There was another post about why there aren't more multiple medalists in figure skating. It brings up a lot of questions for me.

Evan buys a $300,000 car after medaling, supported by sponsors. He states he can't compete in the upcoming Worlds due to a stress fracture - but he can get paid to skate in Stars on Ice and dance on "..The Stars". Isn't Stars on Ice a professional contract? (Maybe not - but it's exactly like one.) And have you seen the physical requirements to work out on Dancing with the Stars? We saw one contestant quit because of a stress fracture last season. This was a last minute thing for Evan - he seemed to ask for it for the first time in his Vancouver interviews.

So is the injury excuse lame, and he really doesn't want to meet Plushenko again?

And what are the rules for competing in the Olympics - what makes you a pro? I thought the eligibility had been very much relaxed. Here again is a familar scenario, when the American champions have often gone immediately into appearance contracts, not planning or wanting to work on and defend an Olympic title. Could they if they wanted to, after skating in professional shows? It's probably just not practical, considering how lucrative and demanding their new lifestyle is.

I can answer some of those for you.

First, SOI is no longer a strictly professional tour. The USFSA now has a partnership with SOI that has been going on for a few years (Evan was in SOI last year, as were Belbin/Agosto, and Meissner). Look at all the other skaters in Stars On Ice, only a handful of them are actually pro.

My friend Lanie knows Evan. The stress fracture is real.

Honestly what I've heard is buzz from other media that ABC made a deal with the ISU, saying they will broadcast their competitions from now on IF an American wins in figure skating in the Olympics. All disciplines were discussed. Shen & Zhao were heavily favored to win, as was Yu-Na Kim, and Virtue & Moir. Virtue & Moir have powerful backers (according to the source), which left the men. So the ISU agreed to let Lysacek win the Olympics. Isn't it coincidental that almost immediately after this Lysacek enters into contract with one of ABC's top-rated shows? Just an observation on my part.

As for the eligibility issue, it depends entirely on the country's federation's rules regarding that. You can not compete for years and still keep your eligibility. You can skate in shows and still keep your eligibility. You can not skate AT ALL (like Kwan) and still keep your eligibility (like Kwan). Weir for example is doing Plushenko's tour and it's not the first year he's done it.
