Long, drab, bad

I am stunned by the reviews. Is it that people love Gaga so much that any movie she sings in is automatically SUPERB? This movie was bad. Gaga's work scenario was a tired attempt at a worn cliche. There was zero chemistry between the leads. The writing meandered around doing nothing more than hiring armies of costars to inflate the run time to over 2 hours. It all amounted to watching the trailer stretched out over those 2 hours. This does not come close to either of the two ASiB I have seen (apparently there were three).
In the positive column, I will say that there were two effective dramatic moments (when he admits to his brother that he idolized him and when Gaga's posthumous performance of his song switches to when she first heard it) and there were about three good songs. The rest was bland filler or script rot.

But hey, I respect Lady Gaga for her musical talent. I love her style of performance art too (not to mention she is attractive). But she is no actor. Her on-stage personae is so potent that it has saturated her real life to the point that she can't even cover it up with "acting." It was painfully evident from the start when she does her scream in the bathroom. I'll give her a tiny bit of credit for having improved her acting ability ever so slightly since her vacant SNL skits. Improvement is improvement I guess. Still, I can't imagine watching her in another movie ever.

I DO have to say that I did go Gaga compared to the way she's known for looking, you know, the rather flashy pop star stuff, and she's, here, just a lady struggling, like you or me. It was hard to beleive it was her, good thing actually, but rather drab..I agree, and it reminds us of how hedonistic country stuf, as it's been updated to (1937 and 1946), is (1976 became country-rock..)

I've never been a Lady Gaga fan; the persona she has created for her concerts does not appeal to me. However, her acting in this movie was excellent, and she had great chemistry with Cooper. I hope she continues with her acting career.

I like Lady Gaga. I like Bradley Cooper. But wow, this was a disappointment. So much hype for this minimalist dialogue and some lesser Gaga songs.

I don't get the reviews, either. No chemistry. No reason for the characters to be attracted to each other. No charm or appeal for the audience, either. Are they supposed to be likeable?

Speaking of SNL skits, I saw the lovely Taylor Swift on I think a Season ending show, maybe an X-mas show, and she was flat awful. I mean, there were a lot of other people involved and maybe the skit itself was bad, but I kinda like her looks and she really disappointed me there.

I used to enjoy SNL for the way it revealed a celebrity's acumen. I got terminally weary of the lack of quality skits about 3-4 years ago and finally stopped after so many decades of viewership.

Above all, the songs were boring and uninspired, especially the final ballad with its tired old harmonies and a melody that has been done to death.

reply

I echo what you said. It was overhyped. I really expected more.

Just thank your lucky stars it wasn’t Beyonce.
