Invasion?

So first off, I did not read the book.

Can someone explain how the aliens invaded in the first place? They're depicted as a glowing jellyfish that has to be handled with extreme gentleness and care, and then inserted through an incision in the back of the neck.

How did the first one accomplish this? I find it hard to believe that it snuck in in the middle of a spinal surgery, especially since it needs to be retrieved from its pod in the first place.

Is there an explanation for this? Or is this just a gaping backstory plot hole?

They brought spiders with them from another world, and used the spiders to do the necessary surgery.

Here's an old thread on this subject:

So the invasion itself must have been horrific for humans.

Massive spider creatures abducting them and inserting parasites in them? Sounds terrifying, is that how it was in the book?

Was it all chaos and horror and running and screaming?

...then whoa, differences...

The invasion is a thing of the past at the start of the book. We get bits and pieces of the back story of the invasion through Wanda as she enters into her new world. Stephenie intended to write two more books in the series ... we might have gotten more of the invasion story from them. 
