Why all the hate?

Can you people hop off the bandwagon long enough to give this movie a chance? Just because you hate Twilight (a major bandwagon) you haven't given this movie a fair shot. I watched it today and have to say, it was way better than I thought it'd be! It is probably one of the best book to movie adaptions I have ever seen, though it has been a while since I read the book.

Seriously though, not everything from Stephanie Meyer is horrible. This proves it.

reply

This movie was awesome. Anyone that hated this is crazy!

reply

This is on of the WORSE movies I have ever seen. And that's saying a lot.
Slow, boring, bad script, crap acting, did I mention boring.

Can't believe that it got made.

Enough said.

reply

Why is that no matter what movie board you go to... someone says exactly what you're saying. Although it's never true, even in the case of Justin Bieber's movie, people still say it. Why?

reply

Because it's true to the person that's saying it, that's why.
Art is subjective. It cannot be quantified and broken down by the numbers like math or subject to critical thinking like science. It relies on the way it makes people feel.

Art is more akin to love or faith. You bring to it your own personal experiences, needs, desires, wants etc... and it either speaks to you or not.

That's why.

reply

So this really is the worse movie ever for you?

reply

ONE of them.

Yes.

reply

If you have not seen "Black Ribbon" you have abosolutely no rigt to say you saw the worst movie out there. A content of a painting can be subjective. A movie rarely is. Art is MORE than your personal experiences. Art CAN be subject to critical thinking. EVERYTHING can.
Then again "Warning: Pedofile released" Wins the worst nomination as far as filming technique goes. Heck i did better family movies that i wouldnt dare showing anyone. But this one is so underground IMDB does not even list it, so i cant really expect people to see it.

freedom aka choices have consequences. You're welcome to come and murder me. Since I will be dead I'm quite sure I won't have a response one way or the other. Of course you'll have to live with the fall out from that choice. How you handle it will be up to you.

Many blessings

well then you have to deal with consequences of being an idiot for making "worst movie" threads. Internet does not take kindly on idiots.

Really annoyed by all the bad comments on this movie, when I first went to watch it I didn't think I would like it but it was a real good film and it shouldn't be criticised. If you don't like it then bugger off to a film you do like !!!!!!!!!

i actually thought the acting was good and a good script. The pacing was good too, it isn't the slowest movie ever.

If you wanna REALY good sci-fi movie about alien puppeteers, go check "The Puppet Masters"! No shiny, tiny-winy "souls" that can be removed from the host only with love.

reply

This coming from someone who liked "The Last Airbender" and hated "Rebel Without a Cause"? Please, you have incredibly poor choices in films.

This movie was awful. So be it. It's boring, the dialogue could've been better, and the film's promising concept has all been ruined by just turning it into a chick flick.

reply

I'm not on any bandwagon. I have never read the book, nor have I ever seen Twilight. But this movie flat out sucked. Plain and simple.

reply

You've never uttered a truer statement. This movie was a train wreck.

reply

personally i think the film is just average overall as i seen it because Niccol directed it as he's one of my favorite directors as 3 out of 5 of his films (Lord of War/S1m0ne/Gattaca) are memorable but The Host is the first film of his that landed in Thumbs Down status for me. i just hope Niccol gets back on track as Lord of War is one of my all time favorite movies and all of his films since then have not been memorable.

6/10 (it's alright and gets better later into the film but overall it's not a film ill be seeing again which means... Thumbs Down)

p.s. i never bothered with Twilight movies but they are obviously not targeted towards people in my age group (i.e. males in their 30's (ill be 34 in October)) but it's a pretty safe bet the Twilight films will be average AT BEST. but i think people calling it 'crap' are those types of people to where they have extremes where a film is either 'great' or 'crap' without much in between for them.

Personally, I found this movie entertaining and thought provoking. I have not read the book (which I will do soon, though) and I'm not sure how comparable the book and movie are, but I'm confident that some of my questions will be answered after reading.

I figured that the movie was supposed to make you feel the part of the Soul, Wanderer. You were to be on a journey of discovery. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not, but I pray it was. LOL. So many movies out there make you instantly take the side or the view of the humans in distress while the angle of the "aggressor" is ignored or tainted with our opinions. I liked this movie and will watch it again.

Just my two cents.

Spot on Deodra. The book is written by Wanda so it is all from her perspective. As you enjoyed the film then you will love the book, filling in the gaps that always have to be left when transferring from book to film.
I absolutely loved the book...and enjoyed the film...but had the feeling that my mind was filling in the back-story while watching the film. Unsure that a viewer who had not read the book would clearly understand what was going on in the film.

reply

Thanks for your input! I still have not picked up the book, I'm afraid. Your comment makes me want to do it right now, though.

Although I'd say the movie is much better than any of the Twilight films, it still suffers from many of the things those films did.

Now I understand this film isn't exactly geared towards guys. It's an alien invasion movie without explosions or big action set pieces and instead focuses on the relationship between the main girl and the resistance and I'm okay with that.

The problem is it doesn't explain things enough (how were these aliens able to take over billions of humans given how small and harmless they are in their natural form?) and the middle is extremely slow and boring. As soon as she gets the the resistance the movie comes to a dead stop and limps along for well over an hour.

Also, there's no real climax. The girl's brother cuts himself be accident somehow and then she has to save him. Then the alien in the girl decides it wants to die for no real reason except to get an emotionally false ending, but then the alien doesn't die and that's pretty much the climax.

The love triangle (or square I guess) was forced and neither of the guys were interesting in any way. The one guy's only defining character trait is he likes to force himself on young women whose house he just broke into. And don't get me started on the southern accents.

And aside from pacing the other major problem is casting. I have nothing against Diane Kruger but she was absolutely terrible here. Someone like Lena Headey or Gina Torres could have brought some real menace to this role.

But really, the heart of why the movie sucks is its major plot problems. The aliens don't use deadly force at all. They basically just knock you out with some spray and implant you when we know full well humans would have fought tooth and nail to stop them. All the humans needed were gas masks and a hammer and they could take all the aliens out one by one.

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

It wasn't Melanie's house. They were both robbing from the same house, independent of each other. And, he explained in the movie that it'd been a very long time since he had interacted with a 'feral' human. He got a little carried away.

I get that it wasn't her house. The fact is he didn't know that when he kissed her. And if it were another guy he found would he have kissed him?

reply

It was a nice house, that most likely a human wouldn't own. He probably thought she was the owner at first, but when he saw her eyes he knew she wasn't the owner, but another 'rogue/feral' human like himself.

He hadn't seen another unpolluted human in a very long time, so he got way more excited than he should. And yes, had she been a man, I think he would have kissed him too ... only not so much the way he kissed her.

very good, well thought out entry here, agreed with it all.

Should have it's own thread.

I didn't want to give the movie a chance once I saw the Twilight connection.

Not sure if I like it or not, the ending was pretty ridiculous (it's ok, we're all friends now!), as well as the teen love story crap but the overall story was pretty cool and the cave set was amazing. I would totally live there haha

I don't hate TWILIGHT (I actually thought the 1st one and ECLIPSE were decent), but I hated this movie.

I agree. I am not the romantic type but i really liked this movie. It has many aspects to it, and it's insane to put this on the same category as twilight.

You know what, i think it's because people are totally spoiled in the last decade or so. Everyone is always complaining about every movie. They complained in imdb boards about Superman Returns for YEARS, and they got a reboot the way they wanted and now they are complaining about that one. *rolls eyes*

Yes! I usually come here to read opinions and discuss like civilised people and instead all I find is people complaining and insulting eachother. So much anger over something as trite as a movie. I mean, you can simply not watch...

Watched.... eeerr tried to watch this film last night. This film was utter trash. Although I think twilight is geared more so for teenage girls it does have some redeeming qualities.

This films entire premise was far too lame. So many negative aspects of the film to give it anything over 3 stars.
