Childish anti-Americanism

It's such a cliche now, to find petty, juvenile anti-American bigotry in euro films, but this one is really stupid. I stopped watching after 5 minutes because, in that first 5 minutes, Americans were called *beep* and "pussies," and portrayed as dumb enough to let themselves get pick-pocketed (and this was of US soldiers putting themselves at risk to bring peace to a war torn area).

It might be a good film, but I'll never know. But is there a law that says Euro films must include some petty hate? And now that hating blacks or Jews isn't fashionable, you hate Americans instead?

One of the good things about being American is that other people's hatred of us is trivial. I'm not saying this hatred matters very much, it clearly isn't of the same importance as the bigotry Euros usually have because, let's face it, you're not putting us in gas chambers (though you'd probably like to).

But it makes for bad film making. It's just childish, petty, and distracting. If you want to make a movie about how horrible Americans are, fine, no one cares. But to just stick it in at random places in films otherwise is really lame.

Only someone who is brainwashed by CNN propaganda can be so stupid to stop watching this great anti war movie after 5 minutes because of that, and to believe that US imperialists came to Bosnia to bring peace.

'You're not putting us in gas chambers, though you'd probably like to?'

Way to shoot down your own argument dude. That's just the kind of bigotry and sweeping generalisation I'd expect from a small-minded human being ie. the act of one particular ruling party in one mid-European country decades and decades ago. Notice I didn't say 'small-minded American'? That would be nationalistic and bigoted. Unlike me, you seem to view the world just like and indeed live by the 'sins of our fathers'. Yes, I acknowledge the fact our forefathers created boundaries and the concept of 'country' through greed, but that's not to say I accept it. The world is, if you please, 'One Country'. The continents aren't some masses of disembodied land floating still upon the oceans, flown in from outer-space with different people/cultures set upon them to live out a life. This 'one country' just so happens to have inhabitable high-rising rocks that jut out above the expanses of wet stuff.
My point - far too many people live on past hatreds/fears that don't involve them and weren't even carried out during their tenure on The Earth. Your sweeping generalisation of 'Europeans' is misguided and you can respond saying your words were 'tongue-in-cheek' but I won't believe you. The entire context of your argument shows you live your life by a red, white and blue flag and pay too much attention to TV, and conveniently read too far into things to solidify your misplaced superiority complex. The film in question - which you really should watch - is a work of fiction. You may see the writer/director as bigoted, but it's the characters you should question. They've purposefully been created to be 'anti-American' as that is, sadly, how some people are - and Bosnian troops conditioned by their respective government could be forgiven for this. And if you actually read into the history of American presence in Bosnia/Macedonia/other Baltic States before making pro-American comments - you'll see that their presence on many occasions has been totally misplaced, unnecessary and at times provoking more trouble than was happening previous to them arriving...
Take down your star-spangled banner and see the world for what it really is, Brother. You may as well be standing up for the rights and welfare of Ethiopians, Romanians and Indigenous Australians than the people who share one particular 'jutting rock' with you. May I quote the late, great Bill Hicks? He's American - so you can claim some kind of ownership to him and his Words if you like... ;)

I was over in Australia and everyone's like "Are you proud to be an American?" And I was like, "Um, I don't know, I didn't have a lot to do with it. You know, my parents *beep* there, that's about all. You know, I was in the spirit realm at that time, going *beep* IN PARIS! *beep* IN PARIS!" but they couldn't hear me, because I didn't have a mouth. I was a spirit without lungs or a mouth, or vocal chords. They *beep* here. Okay, I'm proud. I hate patriotism. I can’t stand it, man. It makes me *beep* sick. It’s a round world last time I checked, okay?

It is still very fashionable to hate Jews. Where do you live?

reply

WOW. You really took that personally.

First of all: you really missed a good movie.

Secondly, your statement is pretty ironic - you comment on us Americans being called "*beep* and "pus*ies" - but, what would call someone who turned off a *movie* in the first 5 minutes cause it hurt their feelings?

reply

Wow. Touchy, aren't we? How are we Serbs supposed to feel after watching your movies? What about Russians, Arabs, or the Chinese? We're almost always portrayed as one-dimensional terrorists or war criminals.

There was nothing cliché about the brief portrayal of Americans in this film. The Americans were portrayed exactly as they were in our war - largely absent. The Serbian soldiers' reactions were very realistic. You guys bombed their positions - by air strikes. Did you guys have nice things to say about Al-Qaeda after 9/11? In this case, their sentiments toward Americans were anything but random.

And as for being pickpocketed... I don't know where you're from in the US. Perhaps pickpocketing is not an issue. There are some expert pickpockets in former Yugoslavia. You really have to take extra care not to get robbed. My grandfather reminded me not to carry my wallet in my back pocket when I was visiting for the first time after emigrating to Canada. Here, I just don't think about being pickpocketed. It's not a thing here. Also, had you bothered to watch the rest of the film, you'd have seen that the pickpocket is quite an unsavoury character with a criminal past. Being the victim of a pickpocket doesn't make you stupid.

The U.S is the biggest terrorist state ever in existence. And you still wonder why people hate you? Laughable. Give it another 50 years at the most, and the U.S will be nothing but a third-world country with a civil wars and widespread starvation, and its current geopolitical strategies will ensure that it gets no help from anyone - not even its master Israel, or its lackey, the U.K.
