Some dialog left out...Spoilers

I felt this was a great movie but it seemed to leave out some things in order to get to the end. For example he never questioned where his wife was during the whole surgery. Upon her return they hardly even mention he had cancer.

The second thing I noticed was they were out all night with the same man and neither questioned where the other person was.

The movie never really gives reason why either of them were having an affair. It just sort of happens to both of them which is hard to believe that they would not explain there actions. In of itself the film was still very good but I can't help but wonder how the future would play out and I know we are supposed to use our imagination but the scenario just does not seem as if it would work when they all find out who the dad is.

Why did she stay away when she found out about her husband being bisexual.

When Adam was talking to his wife who is he saying he is in love with.

How could the husband all of a sudden know if he was gay or not. He seemed to still like having sex with his wife.

Why was the husband alone at his mothers funeral.

He seemed to be ignorant of the word "Bisexual", yes. Maybe he thought of himself as "Straight and Gay".

Well it was an awkward situation, she was ashamed of her secret affair and shocked at his. With her lover. A man. When next they meet she, uh, doesn't seem bothered..........

They were in a rut, after being together so long. She felt attracted to Adam, and he felt attracted after he got jerked off by Adam. It's not something they needed to explain to anyone?

The second thing I noticed was they were out all night with the same man and neither questioned where the other person was.

Were they out on the same night with him? In any case, well, they seemed trusting of each other's excuses and busy careers.

reply

No one is going to not wonder what is going on when there spouse is out all night.

It had to be more than they were in a rut, She did not even attend his moms funeral. When she was at the hospital after his surgery she seemed as if it was nothing. She was just there.

The film did not seem to say she was ashamed about her lover. I thought she was mad at him, but that would be odd since she was screwing the same guy. I want to say she needed to examine her life but nothing seemed to point to this.

I see you like filling in the blanks and sometimes so do i but there are way to many in this film. The writers seemed lazy because it may have been difficult to explain the actions of the characters.

No one has come forth on there future because it is so vague that we cannot even think of how they will continue. Witch guy will she choose to be with or share a bed within the same house. who will be the primary father the birth certificate.
will she keep both of them as husband and lover. Since the lover never contacted her I would assume she stays with the husband even though she cares for the lover and the child may be his. Remember he was not all that great as a parent.

reply

On the last point, I don't know, I don't think confusion over being asked to help play a videogame is a conclusive sign of bad parenting.

reply

I just rewatched the funeral scene on Netflix. She IS there. You are mistaken.

reply

OK maybe I just missed her because she was not there when he was walking along side the casket. I also wondered what was the beef with his mom and her. There seemed to be some tension between them.

reply

Simon walking next to the casket was just a dream (as was the spitting out teeth and coughing up blood).

I did not sense tension between the two woman. We only have a glimpse of the last two weeks of the mother's life - so it is not a portrayal of their relationship.

Regarding Hana and Simone: their relationship - and the utter boringness that it turned into - their actions and decisions - I totally understand and can see it plays out this way.

What I don't get is that Adam discards the younger lover for these two? Come on! From what we see, the guy is intelligent, intuitive and bloody sexy. We are suppose to believe that they offer him more? Like what? His previous marriage (or relationship)? Nope.

You should probably see the film again, because this is well covered. Both Hanna and Simon are shown to have busy lives and keep odd hours. They've been together for a very long time, and it's established that they lead very active lives that have a lot of separation. Both are shown, especially Hanna, giving excuses as to why they're out late at night. Hanna in particular has at least two occasions in the film where she says she's working late, and another time when she says she has to go out of town for a story. Neither of them are written as the type to keep their lover close on a leash and there is an incredible amount of trust between them; they come and go as they please.

The movie never really gives reason why either of them were having an affair.

You missed so much of the nuance of this film.

First off, there isn't always a "reason" to explain attraction. Adam represents the breaking down of "norms", "determient biology", the idea that people can feel attraction to whomever they please and just run with it.

But there are "reasons" given, lots of them. A great deal of this film is dedicated to those reasons. They are two people who have been together for a very long time, and are feeling their age. Hence the movie theater discussion, ending with the kid calling them "grandma and grandpa". They are in conflict about children, their potential impotency, the winding down of life and vitality. Then Hanna meets a virile, vital man who shows interest in her, and she is stimulated by his sensuality, but also his wit and intelligence. He is something fresh, something new, something different.

Simon is at a crucial crossroads. His mother has died. With his own cancer at hand, and testicular at that, Adam finds his very mortality and manhood in danger. He learns that he once had a chance at fatherhood long ago, unknown, and perhaps that too has ended. When he meets Adam he is at such a low point. The encounter with Adam proves powerful sexually, reawakening his virility in a very unexpected way. Adam is the first person shown to really look at his scars, and embrace them, love them. The possible loss of potency puts him in conflict with Hanna, the idea that he might not be able to impregnate her turns from theory to frightening reality, and that looms large regardless of whether they actually had children or not. Even more disheartening was the knowledge that despite all the years of fear that he might have been impotent all along, the former affair partner lets him taste the reality that he at least once potent. But here in Adam is someone who ignites his passion, but he is a man, and in his maleness all issues of fatherhood melt away.

Adam gives both Hanna and Simon back a sense of life, and vitality, that they were losing with one another. They were still in love, still connected, but they had other needs that were not being fulfilled.

And also this wasn't likely either of their first affair. The doctor in the hospital that Simon slept with back in 1992 was someone he was with while he was with Hanna.

I think your biggest conflict with the film lies in missing who Simon and Hanna truly are, before even being presented with Adam. They do not have some typical, western, myopic, traditional relationship even from the beginning of the film.

I cannot believe I missed so much, I did as you suggested and watched it again with your comments in mind and boy did I enjoy it more the second time around. You have great insights for this film. If I can get your thoughts on just a couple more things I would like to understand or get a better feel for.

Who will raise e kid, I feel the couple will finally get the missing link in there lives and will both keep the lover in the loop.

Even though I feel Simon just by Karma is the father, the film seems to be saying it does not matter as the lover and Simon gets a second chance at fatherhood and Simon and the wife get there chance at having something they both can share. There lives had been separate for a long time with different carers.

I also felt them being in the same bed indicates the lover will continue with both of them.

I think it's all open to interpretation, but what you wrote:

Sums it up perfectly for me. Thank you for that insight, because it helped me formulate exactly how I feel about what happened with these characters after the final shot.

I'm imagining some kind of communal family, where everyone's needs are met.
