French passions, food and toujours lamour

I found this film after seeing Min-ah SHIN in four other roles: Sad Story as a mute, A Bittersweet Life, and the fantastic Arang and Magistrate and the delightful My Girl Friend is a Gumiho. She's really terrific to watch in everything I've seen.

Here she is a conventional young married with a dilemma -- her husband or her husband's friend who "tastes strange" That's the English subtitle. I wonder how she put in in Korean language. Almost all Korean films feature food preparation and display. I like the pretentious analysis by the food critics in this one.

Hello 865,

Nice to see a recent post here since I just watched this movie today and I need help understanding what happened at the end... I speak only English :-/ and have to rely on subs and visuals for understanding.

In this case I am a bit confused. (Often subs don't translate the written material - such as the postcard in the last scenes of this movie.) I get that she said she wanted them both, and I get that she parted from both... but...at the end when Hyung proposed and said he missed Du Park...is this a Mickey and Maude ending? Are you able to help? Thanks for your time.

I like Shin Min-ah too... I haven't seen Sad Story or Bittersweet Life, they sound .. sad.

Cheers.

In the Korean film SAD STORY, Min-ah has a very small role as the mute sister who is a bit of a burden to her family. She has a little playful interaction with a guy on the street while dressed in a Disney type costume pantomining and drawing caricatures -- promoting public relations we might say. In Bittersweet Life she has a tiny but pivotal role as the classy mistress of a older gangster boss, who plays classical piano (I think no lines) and has a boy friend on the side. The gangster has his 'best torpedo' watch over here while he's going to be gone for a couple weeks. The torpedo is the one with the bittersweet life. He falls for the girl himself, pities the innocent boy friend, and lets them both off the hook, getting into serious trouble with the boss. To really see Min-ah you need to see the TV series (on Netflix) Arang and the Magistrate and/or My Girl Friend is a Nine-Tailed Fox (Gumiho). She shines, steals those two series.

Thanks for the reply; I have seen both Arang and the Magistrate and My Girlfriend is a Gummiho and I agree!

I was hoping you could explain the ending of (Kichin) (Naked Kitchen).

Cheers.

If it was ambiguous -- it was FRENCH !!! My interpretation of the ending was that the marriage survived the crisis despite the divorce, time heals all wounds, and they were meant to be with each other in spite of the husband's lack of passion. Orrrr, it could just be that the producer/director decided to let audience choose the ending they wanted from hints of reconciliation. Divorce is just paperwork. If marriage isn't permanent, divorce isn't permanent either.

This week I am watching ARANG for the second time and it is soooo much richer when I'm more comfortable with the story line. Gumiho has been deleted from Netflix streaming for now at least. Damn!! I could see that one a few more times and still be seeing fresh genius.

By the eay, in SHIN Min-ah's biography I cut and pasted a picture of her from GO GO 70s. Found it on You Tube but couldn't get interested in the story -- it's more about a Boy Band and the clip I saw was 9 minutes in a bar for UN troops -- with a song I liked: Soul Man when Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi did it, but not in this rapper version.
