So Cathy can talk to dead people...

Cathy can see and talk to dead people. That does not make sense, since the
Big C is a drama series and not a fantasy series like "ghost whisperer". It is
about an illness. I don`t get it...

It was actually a comedy series for the majority of its run. You don't get to decide the show's genre, the writers do. LOST started as a drama and added sci-fi elements throughout it's run. That doesn't make it a sci-fi show or not a drama, but it also doesn't make it not a sci-fi show. It just is.

But I mean...if you don't get it, you don't get it.

Thanks for the post. It just seemed so unrealistic...

I mean, it's safe to say that I wasn't expecting it from this show, either. However, the notion of Cathy communicating with the dead was introduced in the first season and used throughout the rest of the series.

The way I see it personally is less that she is actually communicating with the dead, but more that it is a coping mechanism for her since she is dying. Because Cathy is able to picture seeing people that she loved after she died, she is making her transition a little bit easier for herself.

Did you finish the series? The last shot of it is the most far-fetched of it all.

reply

Yes I did and I liked it a lot. Laura Linney gave a fantastic performance.
As far as I can remember her husband was looking forward giving her the flowers,
but when he arrived she was already dead. The show was great, but I expected to
learn more about the disease...

The last shot of the series was actually her joining Angel and walking across a never-ending bridge to "move on". To me, that was a bit over-the-top, much more-so than Cathy seeing dead people, in my opinion.

Still loved the series though.

Actually the last shot is of Cathy finally swimming in her pool with Marlene(and Thomas at the pool's edge).

You are correct! Forgot about that moment.

With all 'art' (art, film, tv, music) it's up to the audience's interpretation. Sure, you can call me pretentious for saying that but it's just like with everything in life - your view is always going to be subjective.
As an atheist, I took her conversations with "dead people" to be a figment of her imagination; a kind of internal monologue where she also pictured the advice of her former friends, as we so often do think of our loved ones that have died. I also interpreted the very final scene differently; to me, it was a representation of her leaving the pain of loss etc you experience while alive, while also showing Cathy's last brainwaves. Because for me, again as an atheist, I don't believe in an afterlife but we can never know what people's last thoughts are so I'd like to think or hope our last thoughts are happy peaceful ones.

Other people may believe in ghosts and an afterlife thus interpret it completely differently.

Either way is fine, I would just encourage you to remember that whilst some writers have an idea of what a scene means there are many that choose to create scenes that are PURPOSEFULLY up to interpretation. Also, whatever way you interpret it remember what an amaaaazing show it was anyway! :)

I always thought that she imagining the person there to help her with the issue that she was facing in the episode. Not that she actually saw dead people.
