I've seen a lot of sad movies, filled with absurdism, with depression and yearning. This one has to be in the top 10 of saddest movies. I don't even know why, but the mix of slight success as a superhero, with off reasoning due to mental disease and with the sense of realization that great success will forever be out of reach,...it has a profound effect on my brain.

You're right. It's quite a brilliant movie if you ask me. It's really sad, like you said, and at the same time, hilarious. And not like one scene being sad, and another one funny, it's both simultaneously.
And that's something movies don't achieve very often.

What about the fact that he not only forgives the girl who raped him, but also takes fierce revenge for her killing and gets emotionally devastated when she dies, and then that ending when he cries at the end while staring at her picture? So touching made even more so due to a sense of twisted irony.

It's an odd film. A goofy hero, clichéd baddies, over the top violence - and a melancholy sad/happy fatuous conclusion. Not sure it worked for me and I'm wondering what happened to Linda Cardellini's role - surely it must have been bigger originally.
