I Hate Rachel Talalay

I hate the way Rachel Talalay talks in all her interviews like she's this mega-important part of the series who had all this pull and importance on the set of each film. This woman made "Freddy's Dead." I think that's all that needs to be said.

"I've flown this route before."
"When was that?"
"IT WAS ON THE WINGS OF A DEMON!"

reply

Well, she was the line producer for much of the original series, so she certainly knows what she's talking about when it comes to Elm Street. Her installment may have been shoddy, but her insight is certainly worthwhile.

I always thought she sounded like she was having an orgasm when she talks, she always sounds so excited, no matter what she says!! She scares me....

SHE'S NOT A LITTLE GIRL! She's the head Langolier!

reply

She seems pretty cool, but I remember her saying the pool party scene with Freddy in Part 2, made no sense. She directed Freddy's Dead. About every scene in that movie, made no sense.

reply

I never got that vibe about her acting like she was important to the series. I agree that she wasn't the best director (Freddy's Dead was a mess) but she didn't seem selfish at all to me.

"Everyone's entitled to one good scare."

reply

I'm not sure how anyone would be confused by the very effectiv pool scene.

reply

Quite easily. It has a killer who stalks his victims in their dreams running around in plain view of dozens of kids, all of whom are wide awake. Doesn't make any sense at all, no matter how cool of a scene it is.

Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting.

reply

Didn't Freddy just burst out of the gay kid before that happened? Unless I'm wrong on that, doesn't it follow the common plot element of characters bringing Freddy out of the dream world into the real world so they can have the advantage and 'kill' him?

reply

Not really. Usually he gets pulled out & defeated because he's pretty much powerless outside of the dreamworld. In this one, he bursts out on purpose & goes berserk at a pool party in front of dozens of people.

To me, it just doesn't fit the character & felt really out of place. Good scene though.

Mmmm, big sexy with glasses!

reply

I have a problem with so many people pointing that scene and stating that it was inconsistent with the rest of the series.

For one, Freddy has been brought into the real world many times. If he burst out of Jessie and was now in the real world, what's the big deal about a bunch of teens who are not asleep seeing him?

Two: Part 2 only had the small amount of mythology given in part 1 to go by - there weren't a lot of rules defined in part 1. If anything from part 2 on disagrees with the plot elements in part 2, those sequels are the ones that are out of character or out of place since part 2 came before them.

3: He isn't powerless in the real world. In part 1, after being brought into the real world, he still has the ability to kill and can still disappear into thin air (he does this, making Nancy think she defeated him, but he still came back and killed her mom - again).

I think she comes across as a likeable enough person, but when she starts twatting on about how she referenced Twin Peaks & The Wizard of Oz, & how she thought it'd be cool to have lots of cameos in Freddy's Dead, i want to punch her in the face. She was meant to be making the final send off for the fans, & instead of making a kick-ass final Nightmare film, she filled it with stupid random nods to her favourite movies & tv shows. *beep* Twin Peaks, try referencing A Nightmare on Elm Street instead!Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting.

reply

The only thing I liked about Freddy's dead was his backstory I thought that was interesting, she is ok but kind of seems a little annoying although I think its cool a woman directed Nightmare on elm street I wish she didn't made it silly.

I didn't like how she got a hissy fit about how they were bringing back Freddy and left New Line because of it because she felt they disrespected her.I understand about her getting mad about that, but she has to understand she doesn't own Freddy that's Wes Craven creation so if they wanted Wes to make another Freddy movie and make things right with his movie I don't see the problem. But I thought if was so funny how she was like so offended and left because of that.

reply

I've never heard about this hissy fit. Where did you hear about it? I can't remember it from this documentary or the special features.

It seems like most of the people who are so adamantly anti-"Freddy's Dead" don't remember what had happened to Freddy by the time it was released. By that point, Freddy Krueger had become a pop-culture joke who'd worn out his welcome. With each installment of the franchise he became less of a villain and more of a wisecracking cartoon character... and during the two seasons of "Freddy's Nightmares," he had been reduced to playing a third-rate Cryptkeeper. His mug adorned everything from pinball machines to candy dispensers, and he even had a thoroughly ridiculous album. "The Dream Child" was a little darker than the previous two films had been -- and it was a flop. Thanks to the lack of success of "The Dream Child," going darker simply didn't seem feasible, so Talalay went the opposite direction and made it lighter. Was it a mistake? Absolutely! But I completely understand why she made the choices she did. And she readily admits it was a horrid miscalculation on her part, so I've gotta respect her (and, of course, she went on to make the wonderfully offbeat "Tank Girl," which earns her a lot of respect in my book). And for those who still wanna whine about "Freddy's Dead," here's something to think about: If Freddy hadn't gone out with a whimper in Talalay's film, there'd have been no reinvention, otherwise known as fan-favorite "Wes Craven's New Nightmare."

reply

The Dream Child was even worse than Freddy's Dead. At least Freddy's Dead was (unintentionally) hilarious.

reply

I actually like Freddy's Dead more than 4 & 5. The backstory is cool & Lisa Zane is HOT

I agree with all. She talks as if she is scared of Robert Shaye or any other boss. I think she has no balls because she did Nightmare 6 by other's expectations. If she knew that the series had to end on a serious note, she should have done it. No arguments. PERIOD!!!

With regards to the pool scene in Part 2...

To be fair, there was no real "bible" to the franchise when 2 was written (something that was accurately pointed out by the screenwriter in the documentary). So this notion that the pool scene somehow violated the "rules" is unfounded. Further, I have a hard time accepting Wes Craven's criticism of the pool scene given that he himself pulled Freddy out of the dream in his film and had him go through Nancy's Home Alone-esque booby traps.

With regards to the overall quality of Part 6...

It wasn't a very good movie in the franchise, IMO. But it seems the cartoonish gags and overall lighter tone were somewhat intentional in that everyone involved wanted to have a really good, fun time making (what was believed to be) the last Nightmare on Elm Street film. Not that it excuses releasing a very bad film per se. But at least I can see where they were coming from, given how strenuous production on the previous films were.

Eh I didn't really get that vibe from her. Like others have said she was involved in the series from the beginning, and even if her installment was lame it was still cool that they let her work her way up and eventually direct one.

And I don't necessarily blame her for being a little offended that they made another one after her's, even if, again, her movie was lame as hell.

The one thing I will say about her is I CANNOT BELIEVE she's not a lesbian. I looked her up and discovered that she's apparently married to a man. Seriously?!

reply

Really? Ha! I totally thought she was gay. That's funny.

I thought her insight into the series was interesting, I didn't get any negative vibe or she thought she was holier then thou. She appeared to have a passion for the series and spoke about her experience, nothing big.

Hi!

I wrote this post like a million years ago and now I feel ashamed of myself for being so mean and also because I've changed my mind. Last time I watched FREDDY'S DEAD, I really enjoyed the hell out of it, so I don't know what was up my ass a million years ago.

Sorry for bad mouthing you, Rachel!
