my only prob. with this doc.

Ok, not only is this the best of the horror franchise docs( out of His name was Jason, 25 years of terror, etc) but its also one of the greatest docs i've seen. The first Nightmare is one of my favorite movies and scarred me as a child and made me the horror fanatic i am today.
My only problem is when they bring up the remake and share how they are upset that they weren't contacted or how Wes wasn't consulted(I think so anyway its been awhile since i've watched it). And if i'm not mistaken they kinda complain about it getting made. What bothers me is that they are complaining about a remake when they are the same people that brought us the "Dream Child" and "Freddy's Dead", hell even part 4's Freddy was far from the boogie man that Wes Craven gave us in the original Nightmare.
Did I love the remake, no but it wasn't 90 minutes i regretted. And maybe it was just that they felt it was their child and it was taken away from them and they wouldn't have had the bad feelings if they would have had input on it. I just feel they screwed up Freddy 100 times more than Jakie Earle Haley did in the remake.
Other than that still a great flick even without any words from Depp or Arquette.

Lets not forget it was them that made dream child and so on. If you truly put your heart into it (which according to this doc they did) you will never think it is a bad movie, even if it trully is. Man never sees error of his own ways, only that of others.

I regretted watching the remake. It starts out okay, but after the first scene it's all downhill, and it is a disappointing, embarrassing film.

The lowest point of the original Nightmare series (Either part 5 or 6 IMO) are still better than the Nightmare remake.

reply

I loved the remake. It will never have the same impact, but I loved how they went down a darker route. JEH was a cracking Freddy. The remake was me we going to please everyone though.

reply

Ok again I wasn't he biggest fan of the remake but to say the lowest parts of 5&6 were better than the remake(all due respect) is a crazy statement, and I may see your point when it comes to part 5 but part 6 failed in every imaginable circumstance, the story, acting, dialogue , music,FX,the cheesy gimmick of having the last 20 minutes in 3D. Even Englund couldn't save that movie. The remake had some redeemable qualities not many but it was at least entertaining and Freddy was somewhat scary again and wasn't a circus clown spouting off one-liners.

reply

I agree. From part 4-6 they were NOTHING like the original movie and were most certainly parodies of the first 3, especially Freddys Dead. The remake was LIGHT YEARS better than those travesties. People complaining the remake was a cash grab need to watch this doc and realize EVERY DAMN SEQUEL was a cash grab as well. Well said and I agree with you.

I liked the remake and dream warriors was my fav freddy movie.

The first time I saw the remake, I thought it was okay. The second time, I was like; "Yeah, this aint so good."

I think my problem was, that I was so offended that somebody other than Robert had played Freddy my whole concentration was on him. JEH was actually okay. Not in the same league as the original, but not bad. You certainly can't blame him for taking the role.

However, on rewatching it, it really struck me how everything else sucked. There was no personality written into the teenagers, and the actors didn't really look like they wanted to be there. You cared about all the characters in the original NOES. Heather Langenkamp is considered horror royalty, but the others all live up to their roles. In the remake, it's just Freddy bullying a lot of bland teenagers.

reply

Hurricane - I agree fully about the teenager part. I didn't care about a single one of them and didn't think that any of them were the least bit likeable. I wouldn't have been upset if Freddy ended up killing them all. I still don't understand why Rooney Mara would bother taking the role of Nancy if she didn't even want it to begin with. Didn't she intentionally try to sabotage her audition to not get the part? Or was she contractually obligated to do a movie for the studio? I never fully understood the whole situation.

As for JEH, I think that there was going to be hatred for whomever played Freddy. I thought he did decent enough and had no problem with him in the role. It was just the movie itself that I thought was awful.

reply

The OP is wrong. They never talk about the remake in this documentary.

reply

In the version i have they never bring up the remake but there might be different versions out there.

reply

There are different versions?

It is chapter 10 in the extended interviews on the bonus disc that they bring up the remake, so technically not in the original released doc but then again is part of the film at the same time. Sorry for not clarifying that

That might be it.

It's been a couple of years since I watched this, but I could've sworn I remembered them mentioning the remake.

reply

The remake was mostly mentioned in the deleted scenes. To be fair looking at the remake I understand their bitterness towards it. It just a very pale copy of the first film.

reply

It was my second least favorite remake ever after the terrible mess of Friday...
Recently saw a screening of the original nearby and its STILL creepy and unsettling
A masterpiece imo anyway

reply

Yeh me too! I Definitely see it as one of the worst remakes! Platinum Dunne really messed up with Jason and Freddy! I am glad Michael Bay is no longer messing around with horror icons. The original really still holds up remarkably well.

reply

NOES is soooo great!
I saw the Evil Dead remake in the theater with friends
Now THATS how you do a remake!

reply

YES! the Evil Dead remake was the perfect example of a remake well done, loved the all drug intervention storyline. There are a few good remake..The Fly was a terrific remake that surpassed the original in every way, The hills have eye was not too bad either. The thing these three have in common is that they just did not copy and paste, they took the general concept of the franchise they were working on and found a fresh way to tell their story. Friday the 13 and ANOES remakes were just telling the stories that were told and brought nothing new to the table.

reply

Agreed
Good points on The Fly and THHE as well

My only two problems with this doc were Tuesday Knight and Lezlie Dean. What the crap was up with Lezlie Dean???
