Who murdered her?
Why was the family told it was "natural causes"?

The stepdad. He had her car (her 3rd daughter according to the aunt), and there is a brief shot of him dragging her out of the trunk and into the water.

After having watched the movie, I took it as David Layton who killed their mom. At the end of the movie, it shows a flashback of him opening the convertible's trunk and the mom is inside. I found it odd earlier in the movie when he asked Sara if they had met before because she looked familiar so I guess he was their father (well they are half-sisters so I take it he was Sara's father and Nina's stepfather or the other way around which is why Nina said it was disgusting having sex with him).

shareWhen Sara's bf stopped by the aunt's house, the aunt tells him they were half-sisters, different ---- I honestly forgot what way, but you'd think if the guy was actually Nina's dad, she would be a tad more disgusted than she was than if it was a stepdad. I took the disgust being that Nina is a lesbian or maybe given the guy's true nature. And, Sara in the flashback wasn't that young. If THAT is when the guy saw her, she wouldn't look/sound so different that it would be a vague "don't I know you"?
