A bit confusing ... (spoilers)

So, Nina and Sara are half-sisters -- same mom, different dads?

David Layton kills their mom and Nina later marries him as part of a revenge plot? Where does Alex -- whose mom also died in suspicious circumstances -- come in? Shawn investigates Alex after the murders and it turns out David Layton seems to have killed Alex's mom to get her money. So, he killed two people? Is that why Nina and Sara decided to choose then to kill him -- since he killed again?

Also, David Layton vaguely thinks Sara looks familiar. If she is his daughter (even from a decade or so before), you'd think she didn't change so much that he would only vaguely recognize her. But, then the same might be said about Nina, who is a few years old, so would have been a teenager or so when the mom was killed. Where was Nina at the time? Nina and Sara moved in with the aunt.

I personally didn't catch that he was supposed to be the murderer of the mom & that to me just confuses things a bit too much. But, yeah, the actress who plays Sara says in the DVD extras that the sisters were plotting to get revenge. This makes Nina's "disgust" more than a matter of being a lesbian having sex with a guy. She had sex with her stepdad and the murderer of her mom, after all.

If I got all of this straight ...

(the aunt tells Shawn they are half-sisters)

I thought Nina was David's daughter and the two of them schemed to kill off Alex's mom to get her money which is evil and gross. Otherwise if he's Sara's dad how does he not recognize his own daughter? Either way, it's very confusing.

It's possible I missed something in all of the confusion, but did the movie imply David was the dad of either girl? I just thought he was the boyfriend or husband of their mom, not necessarily their dad. So years later when he thinks Sarah looks familiar, it's possible that when he first met Nina (although we don't see it) he probably thought the same about her too...because they happened to be the little girls of the woman he killed years back.

They were half-sisters. David was Sara's biological father, not Nina's. She said it was disgusting probably because he was the one who killed their mom. She had to have sex with her step-father who murdered her mom. That is still disgusting because she despises him.

David not recognizing both his daughters is def strange. I am still not sure how they expected that one to pass. Because they would have had to stay with him up until they were 18 to leave. Or 16 if they wanted to get emancipated from him. And Sara was supposed to be college age, and Nina 5 years older. So, from 16 or 18 he'd definitely recognize them. So, to just have it make sense for my own sanity--I figure that they realized their father killed their mom. And immediately asked if they could stay with their aunt and live with her shortly after (which was when they were very little) Which I am sure David was cool with because he's obviously a crazy a-hole who kills people, and probably didn't want kids anyway. Especially after all that. So their aunt raised them. And he didn't recognize them because the looked to be about 3 years old and 8 years old. Yes---in real life, he'd probably still recognize at least Nina. But, it's a movie.

The dude 20 bucks to hit on Alex was to form some kind of way of meeting her, geting *some* of her trust--knowing she was a lesbian she knew a drunk guy saying something crude would piss her off, so her jumping in to save her was her entrance into getting Alex to like her, and befriend her. And if you notice, the way she says hello and introduces herself was very flirty. But I don't see how they could have known that would cement the deal, and how they knew Alex would even have it in her to kill anyone. Maybe they were just hoping. A huge plothole is yeah they had this whole plan in motion, but Alex was the one to come up with the murder idea first. How did they know she would be that kind of person and make that sort of plan? Maybe Nina was the one who told Alex to say that to Sara----but if that were the case, the Brooke thing makes no sense. How did they know Brooke would get her fired, get her kicked out of school and housing? Big plothole. Unless someone else can figure that one out for me.

I had to come here coz I didnt even notice it was the same guy at the end lol
Im guessing I missed something and maybe the kids went to their aunts when they were still really young so he didnt recognise them

But just wanted to add to the last paragraph, maybe Brooke didnt get her kicked out of the dorm and stuff, we only saw her dob about the taking money thing, Alex might have been the one to get her kicked out of her house and lose the scholarship. Or even it was part of Ninas plan...I didnt think of that til i just read your post. When she confronted brooke she may have not even known what she was talking about.
But I also totally agree, I duno how they expected Alex to kill brooke first and actually be a killer

I feel like I have to watch it again in case I missed stuff lol
