So, d'Artagnan's father shows him a major weakness in his defenses...

Then tells him he has nothing left to teach him? How about teaching him to block that attack? I know it's small, but I just remembered that stuck out with me when I watched the movie.

True, but if that was the case, show him the move when you first start sparring with him. At least then, he can work on his defense, maybe not defending against the move itself, but work on not making himself vulnerable to begin with.
