shareSo they could bring him back for the sequel . Unfortunately that's not going to happen, but I suspect they kept Milady, the Duke and the Cardinal all alive and free for that purpose.
From a story perspective all I can figure is that the Musketeers thought that if they were to expose the Cardinal that it would send shockwaves that could tear the country apart. They now had leverage on him, and would be able to keep an eye on him, in effect neutering him.

Mikkelsen should be alive too. Afterall he was alive in the books and he is a great actor. Whole D'artagnan ve Rochefor duel was childish in the movie.
